This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 885
I'm not gonna miss you.
I'll grieve for the family and friends who mourn you, the loved ones, the fans, the many who cherished you and your music, and who now have to address the dismal inevitability of a world without Glen Campbell.
But there will never be a world without Glen Campbell. Ever. The legacy you leave is rich and eternal, and it will continue to be enjoyed by millions. You were an ace studio musician, an effervescent performer, a gifted entertainer. You were in The Beach Boys! You played with seemingly everybody, from Dean Martin to The Monkees, you were one of the lead voices (with Bruce Johnston) on the brilliant "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius, and you had a classic hit or two (or dozens) of your own. You could play. You were unforgettable.
The disease that ravaged you likely made you forget all that. The last years of your life were plagued by this merciless predator, this malady that robbed you of recollections and treasured points of light and warmth from throughout your life. Today, you suffer that no more. We can't be glad. We will still mourn. But there is comfort on your behalf, a soothing consolation that you have at long last found the peace you deserved.
The music plays. "Guess I'm Dumb." "Galveston." "Wichita Lineman." "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife." "Gentle On My Mind." "Where's The Playground Susie." "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." The underrated "Sunflower" and "Try A Little Kindness." Duets with Bobbie Gentry. That wonderful album, Ghost On The Canvas, you did in 2013. That haunting, harrowing 2015 single, "I'm Not Gonna Miss You." Your recent farewell, Adios. Songs have no expiration date. Art is the nearest glimpse of immortality we mortals are allowed. Glen Campbell's music is immortal. As we bid farewell to the man, his work remains a door that's always open, with a path that's free to walk.
I'm not gonna miss you. I'll never forget you. And the Wichita lineman is still on the line.
This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
