This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 905: The Countdown!
First things first: congratulations to Circe Link & Christian Nesmith, whose sublime song "I'm On Your Side" was This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio's most-played track in 2017. Congratulations also to that up and coming combo The Beatles, TIRnRR's # 1 most-played act. They're gonna go far, those lads
Man, I love our countdown shows. Tabulated for us each year by the mighty Fritz Van Leaven, The Countdown gives us a chance to celebrate the music that enthralled us over the course of a year, to play back what we played a lot during the preceding twelve months. It's always a mix of newer stuff and older stuff, because pop music's vitality is timeless; we always wanna hear The Beatles and The Kinks and The Ramones and The Monkees, and we always wanna hear the latest and the greatest, too. That's why we wanted to do a radio show. And that's why we're still doing it, 905 shows in.
For us, the musical highlights of 2017 included the debut of Pop Co-Op, an ace combo that formed in part because of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, and whose CD Four State Solution is Your Favorite Album Of 2017. I got to see Paul McCartney in concert for the first time. The Flashcubes celebrated their 40th anniversary. And Dana & I put together our best compilation CD yet: This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4, released by Kool Kat Musik, is a source of great pride and fulfillment for us. (And it's still available, so buy it directly from Kool Kat, or for $15 PayPal [including domestic postage] to ccdatsme@aol.com)
Our delight with TIRnRR # 4 is amply reflected in the countdown stats. In addition to the Circe Link & Christian Nesmith track perched cheerfully at # 1, The Slapbacks' ace TIRnRR # 4 cover of Gary Frenay's "Make Something Happen" was # 2, sixteen more tracks from the compilation also made the countdown, and each track that didn't make the countdown just barely missed it. It may be a sin of pride, but if that's wrong we don't wanna be right: Dana and I remain just deliriously pleased with the sheer rockin' pop splendor of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4.
NEXT WEEK: TIRnRR's twentieth year continues, as we get started on the serious business of buildin' next year's countdown show. But right now, this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on Sunday nights in Syracuse this year.
Interested parties will be able to check out the complete lists of TIRnRR's 125 most-played acts and 92 most-played tracks over the next couple of days at my blog Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do), carlcafarelli.blogspot.com
