Syracuse's own power pop powerhouse The Flashcubes experienced a sudden and unexpected surge of support on YouTube this week. All right, maybe we shouldn't call a total of two new 'Cubes-positive video posts (one actually a reaction to the first) a surge, but it was nonetheless a cool thing for this long-time Flashcubes fan to see.
The first came courtesy of Mathew Street, a vlogger who takes his nom du tube from the Liverpool, England street that was home to the legendary Cavern Club. It follows that most of Mr. Street's YouTube posts are related to The Cavern's most famed 'n' acclaimed alumni, The Beatles. Mathew's also done some general power pop stuff, some posts about King Elvis I and other founding fathers (Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Del Shannon), Queen, The Raspberries, and a recent video about Utopia. But it's not like he's covering every (or many) other act(s) in the vast and wonderful world of power pop.
Which is what makes Mathew Sweet's video "Ladies And Gentlemen...The Flashcubes!" all the more amazing. Go watch it, either via this link, or embedded below:
Another Beatlefan vlogger named Mean Mr Mayo was inspired to follow Mathew's "Ladies And Gentlemen...The Flashcubes!" with "Re-Introducing...The Flashcubes!," his own comedy video about racing to the record store to stock up on Flashcubes. Link to it here, or follow the bouncy embed:
The world is finally starting to conform to my wishes! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAA!!
I dunno what prompted this seemingly spontaneous outburst of 'Cubesmania, but it follows the appearance of The Flashcubes' "Damaged Beyond Repair" on the ABC sitcom Speechless in December (covered here, here, and here), and I say it's another step on The Flashcubes' inevitable ascent to utter global domination. It's about damned time.
