This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 836: The Meghan & Carl Show
In just one week, my daughter Meghan will leave Syracuse to begin her senior year at Ithaca College. I don't understand how this time stuff works. It really doesn't seem so long ago that she was this little, little girl, barely a toddler, riding in a friend's van and calling it a school bus (or, really, "'cool bus!"). I've enjoyed every stage along the way, even the most difficult parts, because nothing I've ever done has filled me with more pride and joy than just looking at Meghan, and knowing I'm her Dad.
She generally kind of tolerates me, too.
For the fourth year in a row, Meghan has spent the final Sunday night of her summer break at Westcott Radio, co-hosting a special edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio dubbed The Meghan & Carl Show. Meghan co-hosts with Dana a few times during the year, but we save this one Sunday each August for father and daughter to create a radio show. Dana's still there to facilitate (and referee if necessary), but the music is picked by Meghan and me. Even though our tastes differ, it has always been a pleasure to share music with Meghan, and I hope that never changes.
For this year's Meghan & Carl Show, Meghan was set to play a bunch of her recent favorites, while I planned to rummage through my Virtual Ticket Stub Gallery to play a few tracks from bands I've seen live over the years. But Westcott Radio's ever-fragile webcast has been outta commission since mid-July, and the technical issues remain unresolved. I had been looking forward to this show for months, and I was so, so disappointed by its cancellation.
So we figured we'd just go ahead and do the show anyway.
Even though we couldn't do a live webcast, nothing really prevented us from going into the studio and recording a show for podcast. It's not our preferred method--it's really so much more enjoyable to do a show live, with real-time audience response--but it was infinitely superior to a mere nuthin'. We kept our Facebook chat group https://www.facebook.com/groups/135175896551553/ open, and posted videos of the songs we were playing; a few of our regular TIRnRR Faithful helped us simulate the live radio experience. It was a night of sharing music with my daughter. Ya can't beat that.
