As This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio approaches its 25th anniversary at the end of this year (and the Dana & Carl radio shows go back even farther, to 1992), I'm amazed that we still find great stuff we haven't played before. Not just minty-fresh releases--we hope there are irresistible new things coming out pret' near every week--but classics that we just never got around to programming before.
For example: this week is the first time Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" has ever graced a TIRnRR playlist. It's also the first time we've ever played the studio version of the Ramones' "Pet Sematary," a song which made its TIRnRR debut as a live track all the way back in...um, April of this year. See, it takes us some time to get around to things.
We like to play favorites; you can't have a hit record if you only play it once. We also want to program some surprises, whether it's a deep cut you don't know or a familiar fave you didn't expect. We have three hours a week. We aim to fill that open space with an array of nonpareil tunes that can stand up to anything else anywhere. The known and the unknown, old, new, and new-to-us.
It's all pop music. The best three hours of radio on the whole friggin' planet. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

I'll be at Generation to chat with fellow Ramones fans, talk about the book, the interviews, and how the music of the Ramones impacted my life.
