POP-A-LOOZA: The Kinks In The '70s

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is a brief (and brand-new) appreciation of my five favorite '70s tracks by The Kinks.

Generally, the shared Boppin' Pop-A-Loozas have been pieces that were previously posted right here at Boppin'. Not this time! It was written in response to a request from Pop-A-Looza's CEO Dan Pavelich, so I thought it was appropriate for him to have proper dibs on it. It will eventually appear here as well, but for now, it's exclusive to Pop-A-Looza.

And it's the first edition of yet another new blog series, 5 Above. Here's the boilerplate:

5 Above picks five great songs within a specific category. Look out below--these are five that rise above.

Future 5 Above subjects may include The Kinks in the '80s, Herman's Hermits, comic book music, and...well, I don't know yet. Commitment to maintaining a daily blog means I always have a number of ideas going, some of which are realized more quickly than others. 5 Above is not a substitute for the weekly 10 Songs, though it is a junior version of my very sporadic All-Time Top 25, a feature which has previously cast its gaze upon my top picks by The Beatles, The Monkees, and Paul McCartney. All-Time Top 25s by The Hollies, The Rolling Stones, and--of course!--The Kinks are all in various stages of not-nearly-ready-yet.

I like having series to work within. I have a bunch of them, and even though months and even years can pass in between installments, they're all there for me to press play whenever the mood strikes. I've selected some representative links: Love At First Spin. Rescued From The Budget Bin! Virtual Ticket Stub Gallery. The Other Side Of The Hit. He Buys Every Rock 'n' Roll Book On The Magazine Stand. Second-Hand Sound. 45s Are GO! The Best Of Everything. Groove Gratitude (A Gift Of Music). Didn't Hear THAT Coming! Guilt-Free Pleasures. Goin' Nowhere Tonight. The One That Got Away! Comic Book Retroview. The Everlasting First. I'll get back to most of these, I think. Maybe all. Definitely some.

(And, of course, my favorite series The Greatest Record Ever Made! is gonna be a book. I've completed first drafts of 135 of its 165 song chapters--a little over 127,000 words so far--with nine of those 135 finished in just the past few days. An infinite number of songs can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns. But the work is not infinite, and I believe I have the goal posts in sight.)

For today, I direct you over to Pop-A-Looza for a brand new piece inaugurating a brand new series. 5 Above: The Kinks In The '70s is the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
