This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl is simply too large a concept to be neatly contained within a mere three-hour weekly time slot. Hence these occasional fake TIRnRR playlists, detailing shows we're never really going to do...but could.
I had a blast with this week's real-world TIRnRR all-covers show (which is now available as a podcast). But with a theme as vast 'n' open as COVERS!, it was inevitable that I wanted to play way, waaaay more potential playlist choices than could ever fit into one real-world playlist.
So: Fake TIRnRR Playlists to the rescue!
This exercise in What-if? radio boppin' collects (I think) all of the covers I considered but didn't use for my half of this week's all-covers show programming. Well...nearly all. This fake playlist skips Micky Dolenz's "Different Drum" and Tegan and Sara's "Girls Talk," both of which were on my original list, but were bumped when we programmed different versions of the same songs (by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs and Linda Ronstadt respectively. Today's exercise also omits a few acts--David Bowie, the Pretenders, Lulu, Suzi Quatro, etc.--whom I had considered but cut before specifying which of their cover tracks I would play. It likewise ignores covers performed by artists (the Bangles, Irene Peña, Linda Ronstadt) who did wind up on the real playlist with different cover choices. I'm allowing the Four Tops anyway, because their covers-show track was a collaboration with the Supremes.
Finally, this is mostly just a glimpse at treasures on my cutting room floor. I've included two of Dana's picks--Dot Dash's cover of XTC's "Respectable Street" and the Masticators' cover of sparkle*jets u.k.'s "Real Nice Time"--that were programmed but cut for time. Otherwise, this only represents my half of our cover choice leftovers.
And it's still too long for a three-hour time slot! It would just about fit into four hours. Let's go with that, a four-hour blowout uncovering the covers not covered. Or something. Either way: here's a four-hour bonus playlist of people doing other people's stuff.
