Every so often I like to take a look at a list of the current comic book series I'm buying. I'm less than three years away from the 60th anniversary of my full-on dive into comics obsession, which was sparked by the Batman TV series in 1966. i'm still a fan, and I see no reason to stop. Here are the regular series on my pull list at Comix Zone in North Syracuse as of now:
Amazing Spider-Man
Avengers
Avengers Inc.
Batman
Batman: The Adventures Continue
Batman And Robin
Batman/Superman World's Finest
Birds Of Prey
Catwoman
Daredevil
Doctor Strange
Fantastic Four
The Flash
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
Justice Society Of America
Money Shot
Shazam!
Superman
A short list, partially because it only includes ongoing series and omits mini-series. I buy all of the books published by AHOY Comics, but AHOY only does mini-series, rendering the likes of Con & On, Black's Myth: The Key To His Heart, Project: Cryptid, and Second Coming: Trinity outside the parameters of this specific list. On the other hand, I'm counting Batman: The Adventures Continue, even though it's technically a mini-series; it's really a series of minis, separated into seasons like the TV show (Batman: The Animated Series) that inspired its continuity. In a similar vein, Money Shot is also a mini, but it is likewise a series of minis. Could say the same about a number of the AHOY titles, so let's consider at least Black's Myth and Second Coming alongside the titles listed above.
My pull list at Comix Zone is subject to constant review and revision; I add and/or drop titles nearly every week. And there's always new stuff to consider. I recently purchased the first issues of new Blue Beetle and Ms. Marvel The New Mutant series, but I didn't enjoy either enough to come back for the second issue. On the other hand, I also sampled the first issues of Avengers Inc., Batman And Robin, Birds Of Prey, and Daredevil, and those are now on my list. Today, I'm going to try out the first issues of new Captain America and Wonder Woman series, and there's a new (Marvel) Captain Marvel due out soon; I'll probably check that out, too.
The list reveals me to be pretty stuck in the DC/Marvel axis; I'm an unapologetic superhero fan. But I scan Comix Zone's list of new comics every week, with an eye out for whatever might grab me, including stuff outside my usual.
What's my favorite? Hmmm. Writer Mark Waid's work on Batman Superman World's Finest continues to engage with its ongoing love letter to DC's Silver and Bronze Ages; Waid's Shazam! is nearly as good, as is his World's Finest: Teen Titans mini. Batman: The Adventures Continue offers some really good Batman storytelling. Marvel's Fantastic Four and Doctor Strange are great, and so are the new Avengers, Inc. and Daredevil, at least on first impression.
And, of course, a ton of minis, from the AHOY titles through Danger Street, Unstoppable Doom Patrol, and Fables. I buy them faster than I read them, but I do read them.
Why else buy 'em?
