10 SONGS (plus a High School Reunion BONUS!): 7/18/2026

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single

This week's edition of 10 Songs draws exclusively from the playlist for This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1345

THE HIGH FREQUENCIES: Subterranean Homesick Blues

We open this week's broadcast bop-a-thon with another great track from the forthcoming tribute album Jem Records Celebrates Bob Dylan, this one courtesy of that force of rockin' pop nature known as the High Frequencies. As our pal Fritz Van Leaven reminds us, Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up" was directly inspired by Bashful Bobby's "Subterranean Homesick Blues;" for their take on the song, the High Frequencies retain the original punk and bile of Robert Zimmerman and Declan McManus alike, while applying an accomplished dash of pure, pretty effervescence that enhances the experience without diluting its anger. The pumps still work! Maybe vandals tried to take the handles, but the mighty muscle of the High Frequencies stopped the damned vandals cold. LOOK OUT, KID! You will absolutely be seeing and hearing this one in future playlists.

RAMSEY LEWIS: Wade In The Water

Before viewing Questlove's excellent new documentary Earth, Wind & Fire: To Be Celestial vs. That's The Weight Of The World, I did not know that EWF's Maurice White had been a drummer with the Ramsey Lewis Trio from 1966 to 1970. See, ya learn stuff watching TV. That connection was sufficient to prompt Ramsey Lewis's return to the TIRnRR playlist, a feat accomplished with the title tune from Wade In The Water, the first Lewis album to feature White. Wade in the water? Smokin' on the water! We'll hear another track from the same album this Sunday night.

Why? We got a good reason. (And we're not taking the easy way out.)

THE ICICLES: I Wanna Know
THE BLUE HERONS: Take A Break

From this week's playlist commentary:

"... A recent Only Three Lads podcast introduced me to the music of the Blue Herons, and further informed me that Blue Herons singer Gretchen DeVault was also in the Icicles. And I love the Icicles! That compelled me to buy the current Blue Herons album Demon Slayer, to pull out my trusty CD copy of the Icicles' A Hundred Patterns, and to include a track from each in this week's playlist...."

Over the past couple of decades, the Icicles' "Snowman" has been a frequent fixture of our seasonal playlists, and I confess my short attention span--which my daughter once described as AD...OS! (Attention Deficit...Ooo, SHINY!)--prevented me from delving further. We remedied that by playing "I Wanna Know," another go'geous track from A Hundred Patterns, and I cursed the AD..OS! that stopped us from programming this perfect crystal twenty years ago.

When Gretchen and her Blue Herons collaborator Andy Jossi were on O3L, the show's hosts Brett Vargo and Uncle Gregg played the title track from Demon Slayer, and I was duly mesmerized: Dreamy and vibrant, with echoes of '90s worthies like the Primitives and the Darling Buds. WANT! And got. That's why a benevolent deity gave me a credit card in the first place.

I intended to include that title track in this week's show, but the playlist ran a teensy bit too long, forcing me to sub the slightly shorter "Take A Break" in its place. Not to worry! We will slay that soulless demon on our next show.

THE RAMONES: I Wanna Live

From a previous edition of 10 Songs:

I moved back to Syracuse from Buffalo in 1987. It was not a great time in my life, and it was still going to be a little while before things got better.

In good times and less-good times, music has always been a highlight. I don't remember if I heard "I Wanna Live" before picking up my copy of the Ramones' 1987 album Halfway To Sanity. I may have seen its video on MTV, but my memory insists I didn't even know the Ramones had a new album out when I spotted and immediately purchased Halfway To Sanity at The Record Theatre up on the SU hill.

The album includes a fab guest appearance by Blondie's Debbie Harry on "Go Li'l Camaro Go," a meeting of CBGB's minds I'd been wishing for since the late '70s. Nonetheless, my favorite was (and is) "I Wanna Live."

Is it a life-affirming track? By default, I guess, though it could also be read as a suicide note. But the guitar sounds like it wants to live. Joey Ramone likewise sounds like he's digging in for the long haul. It's what I want, and I'm going with that.

GENERATION X: Dancing With Myself

The Greatest Record Ever Made!

THE SPONGETONES: Lifetimeline

This week's show was already programmed when we received word that TIRnRR Fave Raves the Spongetones were releasing a new single. Well, we've gotta play THAT!. Advance copy secured, playlist tweaked ever-so-slightly, and this uberfab track "Lifetimeline" was on the radio where it belongs. And it's back where it belongs again on our next show. The lifetimeline is secure.

SKOOSHNY: It Hides More Than It Tells

Think Like A Key Music is one of our favorite archival labels, particularly for their recent slate of previously-unreleased '70s and '80s live tracks by the majesty of the Shirts (as heard here and here). Think Like A Key's new Skooshny collection The Recordings 1971-1981 plays right into our lovably ornery demographic, preserving 21 tracks of left-of-the-dial pop music that merited a much wider audience. I remember reading about Skooshny in the pages of Bomp! magazine (and I think in Trouser Press) when I was in my teens and early twenties, but I don't think I heard any of their music at the time.

Well! We're hearing it now, thanks to the good folks at Think Like A Key Music. And we're putting it on the radio. More next week.

BETH PEABODY: Out And About

A lot of the coolest radio shows on the whole friggin' planet have been playing "Get It Out," the fabulous current single by Beth Peabody. It's a great song choice, and "Get It Out" deserves every second of that airplay.

We also played Beth's "Get It Out" last week, but we've been playing its virtual flip side "Out And About" all along. Both songs were written and previously recorded by Jim Basnight, Beth sang on Jim's versions, and Jim now plays on Beth's new versions, too. Jim's "Get It Out" has itself received its share of TIRnRR spinnage, and maybe that's why our current Beth Peabody selections have gravitated to "Out And About" instead of "Get It Out."

Still, I don't think we're merely defaulting to "Out And About." Man, both tracks are as radio-ready as one could wish, but there is a specific groove in "Out And About" that just annexes my attention, making its continued TIRnRR playlist appearances both inevitable and unerringly, righteously appropriate.

THE AMPLIFIER HEADS: Rock 'n' Roll Riot

This little mutant radio show has been all in for the Amplifier Heads' forthcoming album Super 8, doling out advance singles as they've become available. That willfully manic plan brings us this week to "Rock 'n' Roll Riot," an exercise in a-stompin' and a-rompin' that lives up to the celebratory promise of its title. Rock 'n' roll riot? Sign us up! And yet another track from Super 8 will open our next radio riot on Sunday. Man your stations, Amplifier Heads! There's a riot going on the air.

MONOGROOVE: Back To School

Back to school? Yep. Got a 1976 high school reunion party that I'll be crashing next week. I'm sure that night's soundtrack will stick to the music of the Me Decade, but for now we start our prep time with a spin of  Monogroove's TIRnRR Pick Hit "Back To School." We'll continue that prep on our next show, supplementing "Back To School" with three additional secondary-education tracks (two from the '70s, one from before I was born) that put the proper BOOM! in the ol' sis-boom-bah.

And just like when I was in high school: I solemnly swear not to learn anything.

10 SONGS: 7/10/2026

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single

This week's edition of 10 Songs draws exclusively from the playlist for This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1344

ACTION SKULLS: Waiting For Day

Action Skulls are John Cowsill, Vicki Peterson, and Bill Mumy, and "Waiting For Day" is a Vicki Peterson composition from Action Skulls' 2023 album From A Running Horse. The song made its TIRnRR debut a couple of shows ago, as part of our spotlight on the music of Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill on June 21st. Great song, and since then the mighty Micky Dolenz has announced he'll be releasing his own version of "Waiting For Day" on his forthcoming six-song EP Timeless, due out in September. Micky has taste! We're very much looking forward to Micky's take on "Waiting For Day," and the news inspires an encore spin of the Action Skulls original this week. No need to wait. No need to wait at all.

BEN VAUGHN: Don't Say You Don't Wanna

While a couple of friends of this show (TIRnRR Fave Raves Dolph Chaney and Eytan Mirsky) have appeared as contestants on Jeopardy!, this is the first instance of a friend of the show being the proper response to a clue on Jeopardy! Under the category It's Silent, G, the game show's June 18th episode presented the clue, "Musician Ben or actor Vince," prompting me to yell from my couch, WHO IS VAUGHN?

I know who the actor is (though I don't know if I've ever seen any of his movies), and I for damned sure know the music of Ben Vaughn. Ben's syndicated radio show The Many Moods Of Ben Vaughn airs in Syracuse on SPARK WSPJ, the very same station that brings you the weekly rock 'n' roll adventures of Dana & Carl. We've been playing Ben's music for decades, going back to our pre-TIRnRR mid-1990s series Radio Peace. It was a kick to see the esteemed Mr. Vaughn receive a shoutout on the Alex Trebek stage.

As a freelance writer, I interviewed Ben Vaughn for Goldmine magazine in the '90s. Brett Vargo, co-host of the essential weekly classic alternative podcast Only Three Lads, has asked me to dig out and blog-post the Goldmine article I wrote from that interview. Good idea, Brett! It may not be soon, but it will be. I can't say I don't wanna.

BANDA AL9: I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Speaking of Only Three Lads, the assembled lads are planning a rare live O3L podcast on Sunday, July 19th, welcoming as their special guests Brazil's phenomenal pop combo Banda AL9. Let's have the lads tell you all about it:

"Join the Only Three Lads podcast for a special LIVE event featuring Brazil’s sensational pop combo Banda AL9! Celebrate the release of their new album, Hey! Hey! We’re Banda AL9, on Wicked Cool Records with a live Q&A, fun, games, and prizes.

"Known for their dazzling harmonies, retro-inspired style, and infectious melodies, Banda AL9 have quickly become one of the most exciting new acts in modern pop. Now, the Lads are bringing the Bandamania straight to you for an interactive event packed with music talk, behind-the-scenes stories, and plenty of laughs.

"Fans will get the chance to chat live with the band, test their pop culture knowledge in O3L-style games, and celebrate the launch of one of the year’s most buzzworthy releases. Whether you’re already a devoted AL9 fan or just discovering their music, this is your chance to experience the excitement firsthand.

"Don’t miss this unforgettable morning of music, mayhem, and pure BANDAMANIA!"

"Bandamania?" It's BANDAMONIUM!! In a good way. The O3L/Banda AL 9 team-up occurs July 19th at 10 AM Pacific time, aka 1:00 PM for us ahead-of-our-time New Yorkers, and is scheduled to bop its winningly boppin' way for about two hours. Details are here. Meanwhile, here's another spin of Banda AL9's supercool cover of the Rubinoos' power pop touchstone "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." HEY! HEY! YOU! YOU! A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

BETH PEABODY: Get It Out

Last week's show debuted "Out And About," one of two tracks occupying the virtual sides of a new digital single by Beth Peabody. Both "Out And About" and "Get It Out" were written and previously recorded by the great Jim Basnight--Beth is a member of Jim's band--and we also played Jim's original "Get It Out" last week. This week, we encored Beth's "Out And About" and debuted her take on "Get It Out," and we rejoiced in the power of pop. We'll hear one of these songs again this Sunday night. Which one? We'll get it out and about at the proper time.

TRIP WIRE: Katie Says
THE WELL WISHERS: Dangerous

We got two in a row from musician Jeff Shelton! See, THAT's why this is The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin' Planet! In case you were, y'know...wondering. We've been playing Jeff's fine music since the early days of TIRnRR, starting with his work with Spinning Jennies. The Well Wishers! Trip Wire! Deadlights! When Jeff Shelton hits us with a rockin' pop dba, we play that rockin' pop dba!

We debuted "Dangerous" (from the new Well Wishers album Expected Outcomes) on last week's show, and I already intended to give it another spin this week. Dana's independent pick of Trip Wire's 2020 single "Katie Says" served up the perfect spot to reprise "Dangerous."

Because all rockin' pop radio shows should occasionally offer two in a row from Jeff Shelton. GET WITH IT, you programmers! The act of doing so provides its own reward.

ANNETTE FUNICELLO WITH THE BEACH BOYS: The Monkey's Uncle

The Greatest Record Ever Made!

THE RAMONES: Touring

The summer's here. The time is right. Let's hit the road with the Ramones.

MICHAEL SIMMONS: America

I programmed this beautiful cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "America" (as heard on Michael Simmons's superb 2025 covers album Fun Where You Can Find It) without really thinking about the fact that this week's show would air the day after July 4th. I confess I haven't felt even the merest investment in our country's 250th anniversary, simply because I don't see the current state of our union as something worth celebrating.

But I still believe in the American dream, or at least I believe in its possibility. We can be better. We can regain our commitment to being a beacon for the world, even though lately we've become more like a razzafrazzin' bug-zapper. For all who are willing to walk off to look for America--the real America--we're walking right with you.

I'm empty and aching and I don't know why.

Sometimes I lose hope of finding it. But it's out there, waiting to be restored. Truth. Justice. No kings (other than Elvis).

The American way. Sing it, Michael.

VICKI PETERSON AND JOHN COWSILL: Don't Look Back

Good advice. Onward.

10 SONGS: 7/4/2026

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single

PAUL COLLINS: Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again

Here comes the Zimmer...man. Our friends at Jem Records continue their superb series of various-artists songwriter spotlights with Jem Records Celebrates Bob Dylan, and that series ain't made a misstep yet. Jem Records Celebrates Bob Dylan is due in August, and its release is heralded with this first teaser track, as TIRnRR fave rave Paul Collins takes on Bashful Bobby's "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again." Dylan is (deservedly) one of the most-covered songwriters of the Rock 'n' Roll Era, and the Bard of Hibbing is in very good hands here. I'm very much looking forward to hearing more of this album.

(And if this series ever gets around to Jem Records Celebrates Michael Nesmith, I would really love to hear what our hometown heroes and Jem recording artists the Half/Cubes could do with Nesmith's "Rising In Love.")

MONOGROOVE: Back To School

From a previous 10 Songs:

"I've been a fan of Monogroove's Rin Lennon since hearing her former group On The Air's contribution to the 1984 Rhino Records (then-) contemporary girl group compilation The Girls Can't Help It. My pal Andrea Ogarrio included an On The Air track in a mixtape she sent me in the early '90s, and I snagged my very own copy of On The Air's 1987 eponymous six-song EP during a Florida vacation in 1994. More recently, we've been delighted to add Monogroove to our little Play-Tone galaxy o' stars, and 'That Girl' (from Monogroove's recent album Popsicle Drivethru) was TIRnRR's # 35 most-played track in 2025. Yep: ON THE AIR! It's what we do.

"In 2026, our on-the-air Monogroove presence has been established by the group's recent single 'Back To School,' and that's been a perfectly peppy rah rah siss boom bop in its own right. Pencils? Books? Teacher's dirty looks? It's all writ in # 2 graphite. 'Back To School' pushes against the scornful demands of high school's cliques and ninnies, on behalf of all of us who lurked in the nooks and crannies instead. School is in."

While this time of year may seem more suited to Alice Cooper crooning that school is out for the summer, Monogroove's "Back To School" returns now to the playlist as part of the new Kool Kat Musik release Anthology, a 20-track set commemorating Monogroove's 30th anniversary. And "Back To School" will be back again in a near-future playlist. We can't let the truants have ALL the fun.

BETH PEABODY: Out And About
JIM BASNIGHT: Get It Out

Beth Peabody is a singer and a member of Jim Basnight's band. We've been playing Jim in a variety of his rockin' pop dbas (including the Moberlys, the Rockinghams, Meice, and more) since the dawn of ever, and Beth has just released a new two-song digital 45 with her own ace lead vocal renditions of two Basnight songs, "Out And About" and "Get It Out." We debuted Beth's version of "Out And About" this week, and we also encored Jim's "Get It Out" in that same set. Now duly empowered, we'll hear Beth's take on "Get It Out" in our next show, AND we'll also hear her sing "Out And About" again. Can't have a hit record if you only play it once.

THE RAMONES: Rockaway Beach

The Greatest Record Ever Made!

SPECTRAFLAME: Life Is Fine

In between the lines, we all know that life is not fine. Maybe it never was, and maybe it never can be. The struggle continues. The feeling of struggle continues, too.

A new song by Spectraflame offers...well, not quite solace, but "Life Is Fine" does offer solidarity in standing against the forces of yechh

Things don't always go your way
Unless you've got something to say
But it's just a game you play

Love is fine
Can't get you off my mind
Love is blind you see it all the time
In my mind you always look divine

But they get smarter every day
It makes your game harder to play
But just who's playing anyway

Struggles can be physical or emotional, personal or societal, winnable or...not winnable. The battle rages on. Spectraflame is on our side.

"Life Is Fine" music and lyrics by Steve Burgess

KIRSTY MacCOLL: He's On The Beach
SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE: Hot Fun In The Summertime

'Cause the summer's here and the time is right.

Oh! And if you're looking for some summer reading: I write books!

BUY!!

THE BEATLES: All You Need Is Love

As we stated earlier this week: If love isn't the only thing, it may be the most important thing. Without it, we won't progress at all. Without it, we are nothing. Is love all we need? No. But it remains a damned good start.

THE DAHLMANNS: Dark Side With You

The Dahlmanns are a great, great recording combo from Norway, and we don't play them nearly as much as we oughta. Their 2012 track "Shake Me Up Tonight" remains a legit contender for my all-time Hot 200, and recently we've been programming the righteous hell out of "Dark Side With You" (from the Dahlmanns' current album Life In Reverse). With tough and tender chick vocals, a bruised but resilient heart safety-pinned to its sleeve and the first four Ramones long-players blastin' on its trusty Walkman, "Dark Side With You" is so unerringly TIRnRR we should nickname it "Dana & Carl With You." But we won't! It's already perfect just as it is. It spins again this Sunday night. Light up the dark, man. Light up the dark.

10 SONGS: 12/20/2025

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single.

This week's edition of 10 Songs draws exclusively from the playlist for This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1315

SAM AND DAVE: Soul Man

The passing of Stax Records legend Steve Cropper compelled us to attempt a modest tribute to Cropper's legacy, and the show itself opened with Cropper's immortal guitar work on Sam and Dave's classic "Soul Man." Play it, Steve.

From the "Soul Man" chapter in my book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1):

"It ain't braggin' if you can do it.

"Like many others among my generation of pop fans, my introduction to the music of Sam and Dave was ass-backwards. I have no recollection whatsoever of Sam and Dave's music from when I was a kid in the '60s, nor did I develop any awareness of them as an oldies-obsessed adolescent and teen in the '70s. I'm embarrassed to admit that I first heard the song 'Soul Man' via Saturday Night Live, when John Belushi and Dan Akroyd performed it on the show in their incarnation as Jake and Elwood, the Blues Brothers.

"I didn't care much about the Blues Brothers on SNL, but the Blues Brothers' subsequent recorded version sizzled, thanks largely to the irresistible guitar work of Stax Records legend Steve Cropper. Cropper and bassist Duck Dunn had also played on the original Sam and Dave recording of 'Soul Man,' and Jake and Elwood's faux soul revival eventually led me to the real deal. Gotta give Belushi and Akroyd some respect for knowing who to hang with. But once I did hear Sam and Dave's 'Soul Man' and 'Hold On, I'm Coming,' I would have neither time nor inclination to ever listen to the Blues Brothers again.

"The song itself is an extended boast. But it's a boast backed up by its collective prowess. Responding to Sam and Dave's command Play it, Steve!, Cropper's guitar work cuts and advances like an agile offensive line, its easygoing sway belying the force and efficiency of its piledriving advance. The Memphis Horns add bounce to spare. Resistance is futile...."

THE LITTLE GIRLS: How To Pick Up Girls

It has been a very, very long time since we've played anything by the Little Girls, a fab 1980s SoCal pop combo fronted by sisters Caron Maso and Michele Maso. Their track "Earthquake Song" scored at least one TIRnRR spin some time back in the way back; a recent message from Caron prompted me to snap up a digital copy of their Thank Heaven For Valley Pop compilation, with an eye and ear toward renewed Little Girls airplay. I was immediately struck by the snarky pop perfection of "How To Pick Up Girls," and PRESTO! The Little Girls have at long last returned to This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. Betcha we'll be hearing 'em again as we pick up 2026. Thank heaven!

JIM BASNIGHT: Get It Out

This week's TIRnRR was our last regular show of 2025, as the rest of December is taken up by The 27th Annual THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Christmas Show this coming Sunday and then the year-end Countdown show on December 28th. The Christmas show has already been recorded, and we submitted an advance copy of that playlist to our stats man Fritz Van Leaven. He, in turn, has provided us with the rankings of our 50 most-played tracks this year.

This week's show included 13 of the tracks that will be in our Top 50 Countdown. Jim Basnight's "Get It Out" happens to be one of 'em. I have seen the Countdown and it is good!

OTIS REDDING: (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

Also in tribute to the song's producer and co-author Steve Cropper, and also from The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1):

"Far from home, with nothing to do. Nothing worth doing, anyway.

"But who can say what might have been?

"Soul singer Otis Redding's only crossover pop hit was '(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay,' an incredible mix of pride and resignation, a swagger reduced to a shrug. It was a posthumous # 1, ascending the charts after Redding perished in a plane crash in 1967.

"But there was more to the story. There was much, much more to that story.

"Redding was a huge, huge star on the R & B charts. Rock promoter Bill Graham referred to Redding as "the black Elvis," an electrifying showman with a nigh-unique potential to unite black and white audiences under one big soulful pop rock 'n' roll tent. He wasn't a crossover artist, not in the same sense as the Motown acts selling 45s by the truckload to young America. Redding was the single greatest voice of Stax/Volt Records, a Memphis label that was pure soul. Crossover? Let the white kids cross over to us, man. If anyone could achieve that specific level of destiny in the '60s, it was gonna be Otis Redding.

"Except that it wasn't...."

WILSON PICKETT: In The Midnight Hour

The Greatest Record Ever Made!

PERILOUS: Can't Stand The Holidaze
JAMIE HOOVER: Surfin' With Santa
THE KRAYOLAS: Maria Believes In Christmas Again
OTIS REDDING: Merry Christmas Baby

As each December comes rollin' around, we're reluctant to start programming much (if any) Christmas music, generally preferring to save the Yuletunes for the Christmas show itself. We did include "Carol Of The Guitars" by the Spongetones in the post-tag spot at the very end of last week's show. Otherwise? Deck your own halls if you wish. We weren't ready yet.

Knowing how difficult it is to squeeze all the seasonal sides we wanna play into the always-crowded playlist for the actual Christmas show, I wanted to mix some of our new 2025 holiday-centric acquisitions into this week's pre-Christmas show extravaganza. Our pals Perilous bring us the gift of cantankerousness with their new single "Can't Stand The Holidaze," Spongetones guitarist Jamie Hoover (working with TIRnRR stalwart Rich Rossi) bails entirely on the silly concept of winter wonderland with his new single "Surfin' With Santa," and the Krayolas fire up replenished faith in something brighter with "Maria Believes In Chjristmas Again." All great, all well worthy of airplay, and the Krayolas' track has the potential to be an evergreen on future This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio Christmas shows. (We weren't able to find room this week for a track from Blaine Campbell and the California Sound's Holidays EP, but one will appear in the Christmas show.)

Dovetailing our Steve Cropper feature with our late-December concession that Christmas is indeed coming, we also played Otis Redding's version of "Merry Christmas Baby." The song was first recorded in 1947 by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers--someone send a thank-you eggnog to Wikipedia!--and my first recollection of the tune was when the 1987 various-artists Special Olympics benefit album A Very Special Christmas included a live rendition performed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The Boss provided me with a fine introduction to the song; it's also been recorded by Ike and Tina Turner, King Elvis I, Chuck Berry, the Monkees, and a sleigh-full of other artists.

Otis Redding's version is definitive.

BOOKER T AND THE MG'S: Jingle Bells

As we get ready for The 27th Annual THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Christmas Show, our celebrative dash through the snow is once again accompanied by the guitar sound of Steve Cropper. Godspeed to the axe of Stax.
