Fake THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Playlist: Songs I witnessed other acts covering in their live sets

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl is simply too large a concept to be neatly contained within a mere three-hour weekly time slot. Hence these occasional fake TIRnRR playlists, detailing shows we're never really going to do...but could.

Today's imaginary playlist gathers a bunch of records I heard some other act cover in a live show. In some cases, it was a song the cover artist also recorded themselves, but I tried to stick with selections where the covering artist doesn't have a primary mass-recognition association with the song being covered; that meant skipping things like seeing Tina Turner sing CCR's "Proud Mary" or Cheap Trick performing Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame." That still left plenty of worthy rockin' pop playlist fodder.  Simple concept, so: LET'S GO!!

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl--y'know, the real one--airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, and on the web at http://sparksyracuse.org/ You can read all about this show's long and weird history here: Boppin' The Whole Friggin' Planet (The History Of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO). TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS are always welcome.

The many fine This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio compilation albums are still available, each full of that rockin' pop sound you crave. A portion of all sales benefit our perpetually cash-strapped community radio project:

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1338

I've been a music fan since I was a little, little kid. And I'm talkin' young, my friends--by the time the Beatles assumed control of pop culture in 1964, I was only four years old but already simply enthralled by the all-encompassing delight that melody offers. That has never changed, and it never will. Even if my sense of hearing fades to dust, the independent imaginary radio station that plays inside my head will continue to program the sounds that move me. Music is eternal.

This weekend brought fresh opportunities to renew our commitment to music's eternal allure, and to accent it on a local Syracuse level. On Saturday night, the Neverly Brothers Trio (Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin from the Flashcubes, propelled by powerhouse homegrrl drummer Cathy LaManna) executed a killer live set at Syracuse's legendary home for rock 'n' roll, The Lost Horizon. The Nevs were opening for Syracuse's favorite son Tom Kenny, who brought his own powerhouse combo Tom Kenny & the Hi-Seas to town. Homecoming!

It was a magic night, a reunion in a familiar setting. Tom joked that it was his first visit to the Lost in more than forty years, but that it still looks the same. And smells the same. Only more so. There could have been no better setting for the show, a gig made even more notable for the hundreds of dollars raised for a worthy local charity, sweeter for the buzz of young fans and veteran fans digging the same music side by side, and more transcendent as Gary and Arty joined Tom and his Hi-Seas for a performance of “Welcome To The Working Class,” the Frenay song that Kenny and company covered for Big Stir RecordsFlashcubes tribute album last year.

Magic? Better than magic. It’s music.

Sunday night on the radio, Dana and I were able to offer advance peeks at a trio of new as-yet-unreleased recordings by the Half/Cubes, featuring Gary Frenay and Flashcubes drummer Tommy Allen. Music’s magic continues, across time, across circumstance, and across the dents and bruises our battered souls have endured.

For decades, it's been my great fortune and great honor to bring some of that mental radio station's programming into open air, combining my inner soundtrack with Dana's inner soundtrack to create This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. The thrill of that continues unabated each and every Sunday night. I consider myself so lucky to have that outlet, that platform, that excuse--as if I needed an excuse--to proclaim, THIS! This right here! THIS...!!!

Of course, most of us have some kind of opportunity to share the music we love, with friends and family, and with people we don't know yet. My oft-repeated mantras remain in place: Dig what you dig. Passion is infectious. Enthusiasm is its own reward. And a love of music is worth sharing.

Listen. Enjoy. Share. Not just what we happen to like, but what you like. Music, man. Music is one of the greatest gifts any universe could ever grant us.

For our part from our POV: Join hands. Jump up. And play. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1337

Syracuse's native son Tom Kenny returns home this coming weekend, bringing his nonpareil musical enforcers the Hi-Seas to The Lost Horizon for a guaranteed kickass performance on Saturday, May 23rd. This, my friends, is gonna be good.

If you're in the 315, you should oughta be there. If you're not in the 315, you should oughta get to the 315, and then be there. Oooh! I just found out the Neverly Brothers Trio are opening, and that's Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin from the Flashcubes with ace drummer Cathy LaManna, making an already special night even specialer. Tickets here, in diminishing supply. You have your orders. See you there.

Oh, by the way: We do a radio show. And it ain't half-bad. Evidence of our ongoing adequacy appears below. Hey, we played some music by Tom Kenny, including Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas covering the Flashcubes! I do declare, we're gonna be psychin' ourselves up for Tomcat's Saturday night shindig this whole razzafrazzin' week. As WE oughta! Let's get the party started with a little mutant radio show. This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1336

I wanna be your boyfriend

There is an element of yearning inherent in pop music. Sure, the phrase "rock 'n' roll" is specifically about sex, but rockin' pop can include a longing for love along with its lust for action. Hands to be held. Promises to share. Long walks, fate-filled dances, first dates, second dates, the tantalizing prospect of more. The more can be as chaste or as earthy as mutual hearts desire.

It would be disingenuous (to the point of outright fibbing) to claim that power pop isn't at least sometimes about gettin' it on. I mean, the Knack and the Raspberries (among others!) would beg to differ immediately. The Rubinoos' 1979 power pop classic "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" has always had it both ways, implying a one-night stand that can last forever. The song's presumed innocence is balanced by its sheer urgency. Hey, hey, you, you, I wanna be your boyfriend.

Brazil's phenomenal pop combo Banda AL9 have just released their own incredible cover of the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," retaining the original oomph and deliberate dichotomy, as faithful as a good boyfriend must be, and as electrifying as consummation should be. Banda AL9's Rubinoos cover opens this week's show.

And we follow Banda AL9's "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" immediately with a different song of the same title, courtesy of the Ramones. Playing against punk type, the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" feels even more emphatically innocent than the Rubinoos song; Dee Dee Ramone once claimed that the Bay City Rollers wanted to cover that very Ramones song, and while the claim is almost certainly nonsense...

...it's also plausible nonsense. Pop music. It is large. It contains multitudes. Just like love does. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Snday night in Syracuse this week.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, streaming at SPARK stream, and on the Radio Garden app as WESTCOTT RADIO

Fake THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Playlist: The Best Of The THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Compilation CDs

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl is simply too large a concept to be neatly contained within a mere three-hour weekly time slot. Hence these occasional fake TIRnRR playlists, detailing shows we're never really going to do...but could.

In the time span from around 2004 through 2022, Dana and I had the pleasure of compiling and curating five various-artists This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio compilation CDs. Each of these was released commercially; the first two volumes were issued by JAM Recordings, the final three by Kool Kat Musik, and the first four albums are also available as digital downloads from Futureman Records (Kool Kat handled digital distribution of Volume 5). Details on how you can add 'em to your music library appear below.

I am very proud of these compilations, especially the last two, and most especially This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 5, which I firmly believe is one of the greatest rockin' pop compilation albums of all time. Modesty? Doesn't apply in this situation. All of the individual tracks shine, and the flow of track to track makes the whole feel like a cohesive artistic work. Think of Volume 5 the way we intended it, as a concept album about listening to a love story play out on the radio.

One should never say never, but it's very likely that Volume 5 will be the last-ever TIRnRR compilation album. We loved doing them, but they're expensive to do properly. I'm satisfied that we ended the series on such a high note.

Today's exercise in imaginary playlisting gathers tracks from the five TIRnRR compilations and plays 'em all together. Could have easily added a fourth hour of drop-dead primo material. As a bonus, we also give you TIR'N'RR Allstars' exquisite cover of the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," which a bunch of our talented friends put together as a fundraiser for us. We have great friends!

And our friends have made it possible to produce some fantastic compilations. Here's a playlist of some of the best from This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio Volumes 1-5. And you know what else these gems have in common?

Volume. Proceed accordingly.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1335

Hearing the Ramones in TV commercials is never gonna get old for me. I've been hearing "Blitzkrieg Bop" in current commercials for Southwest Airlines, and it makes me smile every damned time. I don't think it's a sell-out. This is pop music, and it has always been pop music. The increasing ubiquity of Ramones music is another sign of the group's further deification within the mainstream. Yeah, I wish Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Marky had lived to see it. But I'm happy to see it and hear it now. As I wrote in my Ramones book:

"...And now? It wouldn’t surprise me if you saw some random kid today, someone far too young to remember the Ramones first-hand, nonetheless sporting a Ramones T-shirt. It doesn’t even matter if such kids really know the Ramones or if they just think the damned shirt looks cool. It’s evidence of the Ramones’ assimilation into the greater pop culture. In the seventies, they were outsiders, square pegs. Today, the Ramones are the Beatles, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, AC/DC, Nirvana, Batman. The Ramones are everywhere...."

As they should be. And in Syracuse, they're on the radio, where they've always belonged. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
