This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 916

The other day, a friend mentioned that a local weekly radio show plays a bunch of the same tracks each week. I tsk-tsked, but he added, "So does This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio!"

I protested, but had to concede that yeah, we do have favorites we play again and again. I come from a hit radio mentality. My idea of "hits" includes The Ramones and The Charms, but the vision of perfect pop radio that fuels whatever the hell we do on TIRnRR requires some gleeful, enthusiastic repetition. That's how you get hits. Hell, that's how you build a year-end countdown show! Each week, we try to balance the expected and the unexpected, the familiar and the what's-THIS?! to maximum rockin' pop effect. Somehow, this seemingly inept alchemy combusts into The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin' Planet.

This week's example leaned hard on our featured boxed set, the 2005 girl-group extravaganza One Kiss Can Lead To Another, and knocked the world upside down with tracks from Hey! It's The Pandoras, the BRAND NEW 7-song miracle from The Pandoras. The rest? We trusted our instincts. That bears repeating. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl, Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse on The Spark WSPJ-LP 103.3 and 93.7, and on the web at http://sparksyracuse.org/
