Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is my fond look back at superheroes on TV.
I continue to watch a lot of superhero television. The Marvel shows are the best, in part because their platforms on Netflix and Disney + allow them to pursue a cinematic approach, to feel less like just a TV show. I'm still finishing up the Netflix shows, skipping The Punisher (I've never liked the character), with three more episodes of Daredevil to go and the final season of Jessica Jones waiting. I've enjoyed Luke Cage and Jessica Jones the most, but I also liked Daredevil, The Defenders, and even Iron Fist. On Disney +, WandaVision was fantastic, and I'm looking forward to the season finale of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier on Friday. And Loki! I can't wait for Loki.
The above isn't meant as disrespect to the DC shows on The CW. They all feel like TV series, because they are TV series, subject to the storytelling demands of network television. The Flash has been my favorite, though Stargirl's first season challenged it; I'm disappointed to hear that The CW may cancel Stargirl after its upcoming second season, as the series deserves to continue. Black Lightning (another favorite) will also end after its current season, though at least there is a possibility of a Painkiller spinoff series, and that looks promising. I'm hot and cold on Supergirl (also in its final season), but remain a fan of the series overall. The new Superman And Lois series has shown great potential. My enthusiasm for Batwoman has dimmed, but I still intend to watch the episodes that are stacking up on my DVR. I gave up on DC's Legends Of Tomorrow before the end of last year's season; the show is too silly for my taste.
(And I loved The CW's Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover last year.)
DC shows on HBO Max have the same cinematic possibilities as the Marvel shows on Netflix and Disney +, but the only one of those series I've seen--Titans--is way too dark and gritty to fit my idea of who those characters should be. I may yet give Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing a shot, and I'll check out upcoming series starring The Peacemaker and the Gotham City police department.
For now, we turn the channel to the superhero TV series of my youth. "Superheroes On TV" is the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
