This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl is simply too large a concept to be neatly contained within a mere three-hour weekly time slot. Hence these occasional fake TIRnRR playlists, detailing shows we're never really going to do...but could.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I don't know who said that, but I'm stealing it. Sincerely. Rock 'n' roll has for damned sure built much of its legacy on borrowed material--a look, a sound, a riff, an approach--that inspired imitation. Some imitations were themselves inspired, some were cash-grabs, and many were both.
Today's fake playlist consists entirely of fakes: records that don't exist, each imagining if an established artist like Chuck Berry or the Beatles decided to cover a song that was obviously inspired by their own work. So here, our Chuck plays the Berry guitar ringin' like a bell in Bob Seger's "Get Out Of Denver," the Fabs put their own moptopped talents to the Knickerbockers' Beatle-bred "Lies," and so on.
A few of these are an eensy bit more of a stretch than others, and some of the perceived imitations were as likely to be incidental rather than intentional. And yeah, there a few flat-out impossibilities here--Buddy Holly had already boarded his final flight before Bobby Vee recorded the Holly-like "Rubber Ball," Eddie Cochran was gone before the Bobby Fuller Four did the Eddie cop "Saturday Night," and Syd Barrett was in no shape to rejoin Pink Floyd by the time of the Dukes of Stratosphear's "25 O'Clock"--but it's all fantasy anyway, and all in good fun.
We're excluding real-world examples, like Ronnie Spector covering Billy Joel's Ronettes tribute "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" and Roger McGuinn's version of Tom Petty's channeling of the Byrds on "American Girl." This is fiction, and fiction only. Just imagine! The flattery is sincere. Flattery will get you any damned thing you want.
