This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1208

This week's show opens with "Bad Brain," a track from the Ramones' 1978 album Road To Ruin. Road To Ruin was the group's fourth album, and while I've always loved it, I've also always attached an asterisk, insisting that it was a (very) slight step down from the three classic Ramones albums that preceded it. I've recently realized that opinion was (to quote a line from a previous Ramones album) D-U-M-B. Road To Ruin is fantastic--and I did always feel that it was fantastic--and now I'm starting to wonder if it may really be the Ramones' masterpiece.

You're never too old to reassess. The unexamined record collection is not worth keeping. For those of us who like to immerse ourselves in what we love in pop culture, it's an ongoing (and delighted) process to revisit and renew, to rediscover, and to revise when appropriate. Nostalgia can be a factor, but I'm generally more interested in what rocks me right now, past or present. There's time for new stuff, and there's time for old stuff, and I say those times oughta be the SAME time. On our best days and nights, that time should always be at hand, immediate, and everlasting.

Is Road To Ruin even more of a masterpiece than its immediate predecessor Rocket To Russia? At present, I'm inclined to say it is, but I'm willing to call it a draw. In prepping this week's radio shindig, I realized "Bad Brain" was the only Road To Ruin track that had never before graced a TIRnRR playlist. Well, check THAT one off the ol' to-do list.

And so, the music plays on. We'll adjust the playlist as we go. Half the fun? Man, that IS the fun. The road to ruin beckons. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This show is available as a podcast.
