Many years back, on the Audities online pop discussion group, someone referred to Micky Dolenz as one of the all time great pop singers. The comment inspired an immediate scornful retort from another punter, expressing disbelief that anyone could ever place Micky Dolenz in such an exalted position, and then concluding--dripping with absolute snark--something to the effect that "Oh, I forgot this is the Audities universe...!"
Har de har har.
I'm sure the punter thought his comments were the oh-so-clever equivalent of a mic drop, though I don't think "mic drop" had yet entered the popular lexicon at the time. My own inner monologue's response to the punter was a more common phrase.
(And my chosen phrase was also two words. We'll leave it at that.)
Micky Dolenz has never received the respect he's due. Whether it's singing with the Monkees or as a solo artist, Dolenz is one of the all-time great pop singers. In ANY universe. It was true in the '60s, and it remains true in Dolenz's 21st century work. It was true of Micky's singing on the Monkees' 2016 triumph Good Times!, and it's true of the records he's made over the past few years with Christian Nesmith. This is stunning, stunning material.
The latest case in point is the brand new four-song EP Dolenz Sings R.E.M. Man, this is fantastic stuff, Dolenz's own lead vocals backed by Circe Link and Micky's sister Coco Dolenz, propelled by Christian's guitar and production mastery. If you're a pop fan, your universe needs this.
Micky Dolenz. One of the all time great pop singers. I'm a believer? Hearing is believing, my friends. Hear it right here, in our little radio universe.
