100-Page FAKES!: A fading future

Today's blog was supposed to be a 100-Page FAKES! edition of Secret Origins # 2, expanding that regular-sized 1973 reprint comic book into an imaginary 100-Page Super Spectacular. I had about 64 pages of comics selected and formatted, supplementing the genuine title's Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Atom origins with more who-they-are-and-they-came-to-be tales from the DC Comics archives.

While I was working on this, however, much of my digital comics library apparently just vanished. Like, gone. Even scans that I'd looked at that same day suddenly weren't there anymore.

I have some backups, but not everything. I'm going to try to rebuild what I can, and I should be able to find enough to complete the faux 100-page Secret Origins # 2. But that may be it for 100-Page FAKES! It was fun while it lasted.

Yellow Pills And THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO

Our most recent compilation CD This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 was released in August of 2017. One year ago today, I posted TIRnRR # 4 Track-By-Track, an exhaustive (but fun!) 30-part guide to the tracks on that CD. My intrepid co-host Dana and I are extraordinarily proud of TIRnRR # 4, and we continue to hope that more rockin' pop fans will discover and appreciate its irresistible charms.

As the compilation's first anniversary sped past, I became conscious of a growing conviction: this is one of the greatest pop compilations ever done. Seriously. I'm no stranger to hyperbole--I speak fluent hype--but I'm sincere in my belief in this collection. In the broad 'n' delightful category of pure pop, alt-pop, rockin' pop, and power pop compilations, there have been a number of superlative sets. Not a one of 'em is better than This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4.

No, not even Yellow Pills.

Listen, man: it ain't braggin' if you can back it up. Jordan Oakes' Yellow Pills compilations are regarded as the Gold Standard of power pop collections. I can't name a single such set that is held in higher regard than 1993's Yellow Pills Volume 1, and for good reason. It's a fantastic set that deserves its exalted reputation.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 is its equal. For real.

Forgive my sin of hubris, my sin of pride, my sin of Schmilsson--wait, strike that last one--but dammit, TIRnRR # 4 really is as great as Yellow Pills Volume 1. Certainly the two discs share some personnel, as both include tracks by The Rubinoos, The Flashcubes, Chris von Sneidern, and The Spongetones (represented on our TIRnRR # 4 by a radio show ID and individual tracks by Spongetones members Steve Stoeckel [recording with Pop Co-Op] and Jamie Hoover [recording with Stepford Knives]). Jordan had The Cowsills, Dwight Twilley, and Tommy Keene, but we have P. Hux, The Smithereens, Paul Collins' Beat, The Grip Weeds, Ray Paul, and Circe Link & Christian Nesmith. Both discs sport liner notes by an esteemed rockin' pop journalist (Jordan on Yellow Pills, lovable ol' me on TIRnRR # 4), and both are simply more fun than a barrel full of lizards. There will be a digital edition of TIRnRR # 4 available soon from the good folks at Futureman Records, though we're not yet certain whether or not The Smithereens' track will be part of the downloadable version. In the mean time, Futureman already offers digital versions of the out-of-print This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 3. Each of these is a terrific compilation for rockin' pop fans to cherish for all eternity.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 is the best of the lot, and it's in a class with Yellow Pills Volume 1. If you like Yellow Pills, I can't see how you wouldn't also enjoy This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. 

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 938

Pop music has no expiration date. It shouldn't, anyway; a great rock 'n' roll song from the '50s sounded just terrific to me the first time I heard it, when I was a pre-teen in the early '70s and the Top 40 format of Syracuse's WOLF-AM was broad enough to introduce me to Chuck Berry. I'm always looking for sounds, new and old, to fill my ongoing soundtrack. Gotta hear the old stuff. Gotta hear new stuff. It's what drives me every day, and it's what drives This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl.

Sometimes "new stuff" ain't exactly new, just new to you. This week's TIRnRR included two older tracks I heard for the first time recently: The Swing Set's ultrafab "Trying To Get You Out Of My Mind," a mid '80s winner that ultrafab Rochester DJ Mike Murray pointed out for me; and "9-9-9!," a track by a fictitious British Invasion combo called Norman's Normans, as heard in their 2013 movie Ripped! (a sheer hoot of a Herman's Hermits pastiche I'll be discussing in a near-future blog post). GEAR! We also had actual brand-new music from The Turnback (an album which our friends on The Wax Museum With Ronnie Dark over on WVOA-FM also played earlier the same evening), Addison Love, PoP, and Badass Mother Fuzzers. Throw in some old, throw in some recent, throw out your preconceptions, and throw yourself into the giddy, timeless pleasure of pop music. Just like The Carpenters, throw your sadness away. Only yesterday? Only always. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

Good Night, John McCain

John McCain was a Republican, and I am a Democrat. We disagreed on just about everything. But I respected him overall; there were times when he did things that I thought were wrong, even dangerous for this country, but I could never and would never question his patriotism, his dedication, his belief in the ongoing potential of this nation. We disagreed on everything. I wish he had remained the maverick he once seemed to be, but I honor his service, I give thanks for the good he did, and I mourn the passing of this American hero.

100-Page FAKES! presents: ADVENTURE COMICS # 436

100-Page FAKES! imagines mid-1970s DC 100-Page Super Spectaculars that never were...but should have been!



Our first edition of 100-Page FAKES! was an imaginary expansion of 1974's Adventure Comics # 435. Editor Joe Orlando's run on Adventure Comics was my favorite comic book when I was 13 to 14 years old, rivaled only by editor Archie Goodwin's Detective Comics and various all-reprint books like Wanted, The World's Most Dangerous Criminals and--of course!--the 100-Page Super Spectaculars. It's time to return to Adventure for another faux Super Spec.

In fact, why not continue with the very next issue? Adventure Comics # 436 served up another bloodthirsty installment of writer Michael Fleisher's infamous chronicle of that merciless ghost The Spectre, aided here with "script continuity" by Russell Carley, and all of it made gorgeous 'n' shiny with yet another irresistible job by artist Jim Aparo. This issue also included the second of Aquaman's three appearances as The Spectre's backup strip, written by Aquavet Steve Skeates and drawn by Mike Grell. Aquaman would take Adventure Comics away from The Spectre before too long.

For reprints, I selected two tales from the '60s. Our previous phony Adventure Comics Super Spec reprised the first appearance of the sword 'n' sorcery hero Nightmaster, with artwork by a then-unknown Berni(e) Wrightson; made sense to follow that with Nightmaster's second appearance, again illoed by Wrightson. A decidedly oddball 1967 team-up of The Spectre and The Flash seemed an appropriate choice, especially since it gave me an opportunity to include its striking Carmine Infantino-MurphyAnderson cover--huzZAH! That still left room for one Golden Age reprint, a niche filled by Spy Smasher's 1942 tussle with a ghost squadron. Ooooo--spooky! Here's where everything came from:
