Fake THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Playlist: The Greatest Songs You've Never Heard

Regular listeners of The Spoon podcast are familiar with its recurring feature "The Greatest Song You've Never Heard." Just different enough from my own Greatest Record Ever Made! gimmick to keep my lawyers in check, "The Greatest Song You've Never Heard" serves the righteous goal of spreading the word about fantastic music some may have missed.

So! Let's do a whole fake playlist of those things!

We begin with the four "Greatest Song You've Never Heard" selections that Dana and I played on our two appearances on The Spoon (which would be this show and then that show). After that? We let the free-for-all roam as it oughta.

Other than our real-world spin of Eytan Mirsky's "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" (which is itself The Greatest Record Ever Made!), I've steered clear of tracks heard on any of our five This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio compilation albums. Those discs are full-on loaded with worthy entries, and you just ain't cool if you don't own each and every one of 'em.

(Um...ordering information for the TIRnRR compilation albums appears a few paragraphs south of here. Consider this an intervention on behalf of your fragile hipness. It ain't too late to become cooler.)

Where was I? Oh yeah. We did allow one more selection from the TIRnRR comps: the amazing "Highway Lines" by Mannix, a track which is also The Greatest Record Ever Made!, and is tentatively set to be recognized as such in my long-threatened GREM! book. Hey, Joe Mannix: If you're reading this, GET IN TOUCH WITH ME! It's...kind of urgent.

I tried to steer clear of tracks I figured The Men Of The Spoon--Robbie Rist, Chris Jackson, and Thom Bowers--have already, y'know...heard. I am not being graded on that attempt. But for our showstoppin' bonus tracks at the end, we include a couple o' fine ditties that The Spoon absolutely DOES know: Wonderboy's "Girl Songs" and Parthenon Huxley's "Double Our Numbers." The former is fronted by our esteemed Mr. Rist hisowndamself, and is a shoo-in to appear on TIRnRR's year-end countdown show when we finally bid cheery-bye to 2024. Robbie's mentioned that great Parthenon Huxley a time or three on The Spoon, and it's worth pointing out that YOU can purchase a digital album of the fab Parthenon Huxley album Sunny Nights album directly from Parthenon Huxley. Tell 'im Dana & Carl sent you. I'm pretty sure the restraining order's expired by now.

The Greatest Songs You've Never Heard. Man, we will never, ever run out of fresh music to discover, whether it's brand-new or just new to us. Maybe you know some of these, and maybe some others are tabula rasa, baby. Either way: Turn it up. And spread the word.
