This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1284

We really enjoy playing new music. We receive far more new music submissions than we could ever fit into our weekly slot, and we are likewise dedicated to mixing in fave raves and outta-left-field picks of varying vintage. The "varying vintage" bit spans from the 1960s through, y'know, last week, often stretches back to the '50s, and even to the '40s on rare occasion (usually when I feel like playing Amos Milburn). We don't want to play just new, and we don't want to play just old. We've said it before, but it bears repetition to the point of bludgeoning:

Great records don't care what year it is.

This week, our great new records include two tracks from the forthcoming Flashcubes tribute album Make Something Happen!, irresistibly performed by Chris von Sneidern and Callan Foster, supplemented by Mike Gent's work-in-progress mix of a Flashcubes cover he's prepping for the same album. We debut minty-fresh 'n' fabulous treats from Perilous, Maddy Maclaine, the Grip Weeds, the Airport 77s, Emily Zuzik, Tristan Armstrong, and the New Brutarians. We reprise recent worthies by Joe Giddings, Amy Rigby, Craig Marshall, Mike Mitsch's LagansLove, and additional Make Something Happen! cuts by the Spongetones and the above-mentioned Flashcubes. We honor the memory of Mike Peters with a spin of the Alarm, and the memory of our friend Meredith Mancini by playing a gem by her sister Hilken Mancini's 1990s combo Fuzzy. And we build a better playlist with more from that varying vintage category: The Ramones, Chubby Checker, the Muffs, the Bongos, Fats Domino, Patti Smith, Rachel Sweet, Ohio Players, the Four Tops, the Rolling Stones, New Math, the Kinks, Blondie, the Crickle, Oscar Toney Jr., Chuck Jackson and Mark Knopfler, Mary Lou Lord, and the Steve Miller Band, among others.

The result is a mosaic, as I play a record and then Dana plays a record, back and forth, creating an era-indifferent embrace of then and now, the familiar and the obscure, Do you remember this? and Man, check THIS out!

It's what rock 'n' roll radio should be. And it's what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
