This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1290

Most of us overuse words like icon and legend. But make no mistake: The late Sly Stone was absolutely both icon and legend, without exaggeration. What talent, what impact, and what a legacy of great music that will stand, now and forever. We also tend to overuse the word classic. Doesn't matter. The hits of Sly and the Family Stone are classics, and they will endure.

Standing and enduring. It's not easy. Between the news of the world and the blows to our hearts and to our souls, the terrain beneath us is in neverending shift, a fault not in our stars but in the very ground upon which we attempt to make our stands.

And yet we stand. We stand to the extent we can. They're standing in California. New York stands. America stands. Sly Stone said we should stand. We pray you stand as well.

About twenty minutes after I wrapped up recording my parts of this week's show, we learned that Brian Wilson had passed. We will attempt our tribute to the classic legacy of another iconic legend next week. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

As we stand tall.
