Following last week's epic countdown show, this week's show does not repeat any of the tracks we played last Sunday. I don't think Dana and I had any conscious intention of avoiding those tracks--we'll play 'em all again (and again!) in the normal course of TIRnRR--but our eccentric muse just happened to nudge us toward other choices this time out. We did reprise a few of the acts played last week--the Beatles, Mike Browning, Clockwork Flowers, the Cynz, Joe Giddings, the Half/Cubes, the Isley Brothers, the Ramones, and Shonen Knife--but each with a different track than what we heard on the countdown show. In fact, our Browning, Clockwork Flowers, Cynz, and Giddings selections this week are all new or recent releases we've never played before.
We play the hits, or at least we play the hits as we hear them. This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio was founded 27 years ago upon our delusion that we're really an AM Top 40 radio show from another dimension. That foundation will not change, and it will not cater to whatever arbitrary boundaries are inflicted upon real-world radio. Here? We play Taylor Swift AND The MC5, the Four Tops AND Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, and whatever else fits our notion of what rock 'n' roll radio should be. It's ALL pop music.
And pop music is all we do. In a real world gone mad, it ain't much, but we draw comfort where we can. These are the hits as we hear them. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, streaming at SPARK stream, and on the Radio Garden app as WESTCOTT RADIO.
You can read all about this show's long and weird history here: Boppin' The Whole Friggin' Planet (The History Of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO). You can follow Carl's daily blog at Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do).
