POP-A-LOOZA: The Blue Beetle # 6

Every Friday, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza runs a post from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. This week's Boppin' Pop-A-Looza looks back on the oldest comic book I ever owned: a coverless copy of 1941's The Blue Beetle # 6.

The piece also details my recollection of reading Charlton Comics' 1960s Blue Beetle (alias Ted Kord), a character now owned by DC Comics. The original Blue Beetle Dan Garrett (or at least the Silver Age version of the original Blue Beetle) was part of DC's acquisition of Charlton's Action-Heroes line; ol' Dan appeared in flashback in the '80s issue of Secret Origins spotlighting Blue Beetle, but wasn't ever seen much at DC.

Since writing the original piece in 2018, I've rescued my coverless comics from the frayed box in which I had them stored, and moved them into a filing cabinet drawer. Alas, The Blue Beetle # 6 doesn't appear to be there anymore. One of these days, I'm going to re-visit the contents of that drawer, perhaps in pursuit of either a blog piece or a new blog series called Coverless Comics Cavalcade. Coverless comics are worthless, but they sure meant a lot to me.

For further related reading, you can see my introduction to Charlton Comics and the weird role Charlton played in my introduction to The Shadow. And there's a little love for my coverless comic books in my personal history of DC's 100-Page Super Spectaculars. But right now, it's time to go back to 1941 for The Blue Beetle, this week's Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
