An infinite number of songs can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns. I like that idea so much I'm writing a book about it. And I'm promoting that book with a weekly video series, discussing each of the book's chosen tracks one by one.
This week's video looks back on a pretty folk singer named Melanie, whose big 1971 hit "Brand New Key" annoyed my Mom no end. But before all of that, in 1970 Melanie teamed with the black Gospel group The Edwin Hawkins Singers to create a pop masterpiece called "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)."
