I've written and sold a few short stories for AHOY Comics. Each month, the good folks at AHOY put out a free email newsletter, which provides sneak previews of upcoming AHOY titles, as well as recommendations from AHOY creators about miscellaneous cool things that lovers of cool things oughtta know about. The recommendations encompass books, movies, what have you, basically whatever's out there that's worth recommending. For this month's cavalcade o' recommendations, AHOY's overlords enlisted the short story writers, including me.
This month, we're switching things up a little bit and passing over our beloved regular stable of comics writers and artists (sorry, we still love you!) to talk instead to our short story writing squad.
You've seen their work at the back of our comic book magazines, daring you not to expect more from us, giving you that oh-so-seductive "bang for your buck" factor that you can't get enough of. But what's going on in those big literary skulls of theirs? What delights and mysteries lurk behind their kind and yet somehow dangerous eyes? Wonder no longer, as the short story writing squad (sometimes referred to simply as "The Squad" in the media) is here to tell you how to spend your Valentine's Day this year.
And here's my AHOY-sanctioned recommendation:
"Although it's not specifically a Valentine's Day movie (nor particularly romantic), my wife Brenda and I recently watched the film One Night In Miami (available on Amazon Prime), and I figure anything we do together can be called a date. (With limited options in a quarantine scene, some recent dates have included shopping for groceries, curbside pickup of books at the library, binging game shows, and voting for Joe Biden.) One Night In Miami is a fictionalized account of an evening in 1964, when Sam Cooke, Muhammed Ali (then still called Cassius Clay), Malcolm X, and Jim Brown met and, y'know, inspired a compelling movie that speculates about what they said and did. Singer and actor Leslie Odom, Junior is best known for playing Aaron Burr in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton, and he is riveting as Sam Cooke. Brenda and I knew Leslie's parents Les and Yvette when we were in college at Brockport, and it was a kick for me to watch their son own this role of Cooke, and to suddenly recall talking about Cooke with Leslie's dad one time more than forty years ago. I bought the soundtrack album, and I also picked up the Sam Cooke collection Portrait Of A Legend. Listen, candy and flowers are nice, but ya can't go wrong with great pop music."
Go! Watch! And Happy Valentine's Day.
