Prepping The 24th Annual THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Christmas Show

Christmas Week begins Sunday with The 24th Annual This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio Christmas Show. Dana and I assembled the playlist on Tuesday, and on Wednesday I gathered the tracks and recorded my parts. Dana is currently casting the alchemic Christmas magic that turns it all into a radio show. You can hear the result Sunday night, December 18th, from 9 to Midnight Eastern: SPARK WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM in Syracuse, http://sparksyracuse.org/ on the web, and via the TuneIn Radio and Radio Garden apps as Westcott Radio.

Every year, our Christmas show always spins all seven of the Beatles' annual Christmas messages, 1963-1969, and we fill the show in around those festive Fabs. When I was an adolescent and teen Beatles fan in the '70s, it mystified me that opportunities to hear the Beatles' Christmas stuff were so rare. Why weren't all rock 'n' roll radio stations playing them? When we did our first TIRnRR Christmas show in 1999, Dana and I did our part to preserve the moptopped Yuletide legacy of matches, candles, matches, candles. We aim to continue that for as long as we can.

Plenty of jam jars, baby!

For every year's Christmas show, Dana and I each have a number of perennial go-to holiday tracks that we try to include. They don't all make it in, but a bunch of them do. In addition to the Beatles' December novelties, this year's Christmas show offers 45 tracks. Of those 45, we played 27 of them last year, and seven make their TIRnRR Christmas show debut. The other eleven have appeared in previous years, but skipped last year's visit to the Island of Misfit Toys.

As always, there was a stuffed stockingful of other tracks we wanted to program; Christmas wishes notwithstanding, a three-hour show leaves room for three hours only, regardless of naughty or nice status. Elsewhere on this blog, you'll find a list of every track that's ever appeared on a TIRnRR show. We'll post an update to that list on Tuesday.

In the mean time, we hope you'll join us Sunday night for the 24th Annual This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio Christmas Show, all deep and crisp and..awright, maybe not quite even. But FESTIVE! And occasionally loud. Time to grab your mistletoe mate and dance. We wish you the merriest.
