Coming into this week's show, I knew we had some cool new stuff to play. We almost always do. I also knew I was going to be featuring a track apiece from the Ramones' four official live albums (1979-1997), celebrating the release of my new Ramones book. I figured we'd thread all of that with some classics and some other recent delights, and try to mix in a few archival things we hadn't played before. It seemed likely we'd tally up a bit light in the latter category, but that's how it goes sometimes. Gotta play the hits, man.
BUT! Looking at the playlist, more than half of this week's selections are now making their TIRnRR debut. Some of that's intentional--both Dana and I try independently to find at least a few things here and there that are new to the show--but the extent of it this week was unexpected, at least to me. Maybe Dana saw it coming. I did not.
Whether premeditated or a happy accident, the result is fascinating. I don't pretend to be unbiased--or even rational--but I am a big, big fan of whatever it is we do on the radio every week. We get to play the Ramones! We get to play a lot of really interesting records, from the Staple Singers and the Monkees through Justine and the Unclean and...well, you see 'em all below.
