This week's show presents the third and final piece of our salute to THE RAMONES AT THE MOVIES, with four Ramones tracks heard in films otherwise unrelated to the Ramones. I think the appearance of "Rockaway Beach" in the 1979 British flick That Summer! was the first time a Ramones song turned up on a soundtrack--its release just barely preceded the Ramones' own movie Rock 'n' Roll High School--but it was for damned sure not the last.
"I Wanna Be Sedated" in Times Square. "Blitzkrieg Bop" in National Lampoon's Vacation. "Chop Suey" in Get Crazy, a track about which Johnny Ramone said to me, "The song sucked, right?" Well, I like it, Johnny. I'm a fan.
I've heard the Ramones in a Spider-Man movie. My son-in-law Austin says he and his generation primarily know "Blitzkrieg Bop" from Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. And that's an illustration of something I wrote in my book Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation With The Ramones:
"...It wouldn’t surprise me if you saw some random kid today, someone far too young to remember the Ramones first-hand, nonetheless sporting a Ramones T-shirt. It doesn’t even matter if such kids really know the Ramones or if they just think the damned shirt looks cool. It’s evidence of the Ramones’ assimilation into the greater pop culture. In the seventies, they were outsiders, square pegs. Today, the Ramones are the Beatles, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, AC/DC, Nirvana, Batman. The Ramones are everywhere...."
Everywhere. They're even on the radio. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
NEXT WEEK: speaking of the Ramones on the radio! On May 28, we cap off two months' worth of Cretin Hoppin' programming with a special show: GABBA GABBA HEY! A Celebration of THE RAMONES. We'll have three hours of the Ramones themselves, Ramones collaborations with other artists, tracks recorded by members of the Ramones outside of the group's aegis, acts and tracks that inspired the Ramones, songs about the Ramones, and Ramones songs as covered by other artists. For you TIRnRR regulars, think of it as CC's Punky Ramones Pit. Hey-ho, ya know?
This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, streaming at SPARK stream, and on the Radio Garden app as WESTCOTT RADIO. Recent shows are archived at Westcott Radio
