This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1277

Most of our weekly radio shows include at least a few brand-new releases, mingling contentedly and/or rambunctiously with a beguiling mix of recent treats and familiar classics alike. The playlists also usually present some kind of revelation from our music libraries, and I don't mean just a revelation for our listeners. Some of the archival stuff we play sounds new to us.

That's certainly true for me when I hear some of Dana's picks. This week, it was true for me with one of my own picks, when I grabbed a collection of the Selecter's greatest hits off my CD shelves. I wanted to play some Selecter track we'd never played before. Bypassing "Too Much Pressure," "Three Minute Hero," and my cherished "On My Radio," I blasted the Selecter's cover of the Pioneers' "Time Hard." I don't know the original--that will change soon--but I've owned this Selecter CD for years, so I must have heard their version of "Time Hard" at least once before. But I didn't remember it. Whatta track! And on the radio it went.

That's further illustration of why this is such a great gig, even more than twenty-six years into it. It's still fun. It's still revelatory. And it's still what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, streaming at SPARK stream, and on the Radio Garden app as WESTCOTT RADIO. Recent shows are archived at Westcott Radio
