POP-A-LOOZA: THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! The Grateful Dead, "Uncle John's Band"

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is an emotional Greatest Record Ever Made! piece spotlighting the unlikely subject of the Grateful Dead.

If my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) ever wills itself into existence, this chapter will be part of the book's closing lap, perched immediately after a 1-2 wallop of David Bowie's "Life On Mars?" and the O'Jays' "Put Your Hands Together," with the Dead then leading into tracks by the cast of West Side Story, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Joan Jett, Stevie Wonder, Marykate O'Neil, Eytan Mirsky, and the Jayhawks, before circling back for encores by the Beatles, the T-Bones, and the Ramones.

Like a good mix tape, the sequencing is specific and deliberate. After more than four years of work on this book, I have completed five different edits of varying length, concocting versions of GREM! that spotlight 175 tracks, 155 tracks, 135 tracks, 125 tracks, and 105 tracks. The sequence detailed above is how each version of the book ends. No matter what else I do with the book, that concluding sequence is not likely to change.

I have a story I want to tell. It's a story about me, and about the music I listen to, but I think the story will be of interest to anyone who revels in the thrill of a personal soundtrack. As a young man, I did not think it plausible that the Grateful Dead would ever be a welcome part of my soundtrack. I've learned better since then. That evolution of opinion, and its ongoing tether it to an ache I feel inside me, provides the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1): no progress, but an update anyway!

An infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns.

Our favorite records don't live in isolation. Each one has a story to tell.

Anyone who's endured any time at all on this blog is aware of my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). Yeah, I've been working on this thing for years. I finished a complete draft of the book in January, and I've shared it with a potential publisher for review. No promise of progress there, but it does remain a work in progress.

In 2018, when I began trying to turn my GREM! concept into a book, it was intended to be my first book. Yep, after decades of freelancing for magazines, writing notes, short stories, blog posts, and stuff for other writers' books, it was high time for a book I could call my own. GREM! can no longer be my first book, because I have a different book contracted and planned for a tentative 2022 publication. But still, I hope it will be a book.

The draft of GREM! that I shared with a publisher in early April followed my previously-posted blueprint, covering 175 songs and totaling a little under 144,000 words. Since then, I have also completed a slightly shorter alternate version, spotlighting 155 songs instead of 175, with a new word count just north of 131,000. At this moment, I prefer the shorter version.

Unless, y'know, the publisher loves the longer version. I'm flexible. (And I have three even shorter versions prepped in case I need them. Um...that's a secret. Shhhh. Don't tell anybody.)

For now, here's the proposed Table of Contents for that 155-song version. TA-DA! But before you dive in to experience its splendor, it's worth repeating this caveat from one of the book's introductory chapters:

"This specific disclaimer is worth highlighting in bold and all-caps: THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF THE BEST RECORDS EVER MADE! Jesus, no! The chapters in this book cover a number of popular and personal favorites, but it's nowhere near comprehensive, and it's not meant to be. It's a discussion and a celebration of pop's infinite promise--nothing more, nothing less."

Ready? Let's GO!

AFTERWORD

Well, I like it! I hope someone else will like it, too. And the edit serves the bonus purpose of giving me a start on a hypothetical The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 2), while retaining the overall narrative of Volume 1.

Before I close here and get back to polishing this pipe dream, I want to repeat some basic supplemental material that's appeared here previously:

You can see links to each of my 34 GREM! video blogs here.

You can read the book's foreword, introduction, and first few chapters here. (These are earlier drafts, so some changes have been implemented since these were posted. Still gives you the gist of what I'm doing.)

Here are a few other sample chapters (also in earlier drafts):

I believe very, very strongly in this book. I think a few of you just might dig it, too. The work continues. Into the infinite!

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1130

We had a lot of fab new music to program this time out. The new stuff was toplined by the third of four glorious weeks debuting exclusive advance tracks from Suspension, the forthcoming rockin' pop blockbuster from Pop Co-Op. HuzZAH! We also had to find room for fresh and invigmoratin' releases from Deadlights, Kid Gulliver, Bob Burger, Dave Scarbrough, Spygenius, Kevin Robertson, Nick Piunti and the Complicated Men, and the Sun Sawed In 1/2, and mix 'em all in with a bunch of other fave raves from the early '60s through today. Daunting, but...DONE!

And then we received "Have You Ever Been Torn Apart?," the brand new digital single from the combined power pop prowess of the Flashcubes and the Spongetones. Our two favorite sets of heroes in one adventure together! There was no way in seven hells we were gonna delay playing that. A quick revamp of the playlist, and again...DONE! It wasn't even all that daunting. Plus: POP MUSIC ON THE RADIO!

I love this gig. I really, really love this gig. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

POP-A-LOOZA: The Old 52 (Imagining A New Pre-Crisis DC Comics)

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is a flight of fancy imagining a new DC Comics set in the company's pre-1986 continuity (prior to its reset in Crisis On Infinite Earths): "The Old 52."

Although I still buy, read, and even enjoy a number of current comic books (and I automatically dismiss the opinion of anyone who uses "woke" as a whiny pejorative in complaining about comics), I clearly have greater affection for pre-Crisis. That affection has prompted a number of posts here, so let's list a few of them:

100-Page Super Spectacular

My 100-Page FAKES!

Adventure Comics

Batman (1966 Signet paperback)

Batman Meets The Monkees

Rejection Accepted: Trying (And Failing) To Write For DC Comics

Singers, Superheroes, And Songs On The Radio: My Life In Pop Culture, The 1960s

There have been many more, and even that doesn't take into account things I've written about Marvel Comics and others. I'm a comics fan, then and now. Then feeds now in a fantasy about a new line of DC Comics built just for li'l ol' me. "The Old 52" is the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.

Fake THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Playlist: Classic Hits Sung By The Original Lead Singer

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl is simply too large a concept to be neatly contained within a mere three-hour weekly time slot. Hence these occasional fake TIRnRR playlists, detailing shows we're never really going to do...but could.

Today we have a sequel of sorts to a previous fake TIRnRR playlist, which gathered tracks by acts I've never seen live, but which included at least one member I have seen perform under a different billing. This one gathers songs I've witnessed in a live setting, sung by the singer listed in brackets, regardless of who else was playing with him or her that day or night. For example, I've never seen the Beatles, but I've seen Paul McCartney sing "Helter Skelter."

And I've seen the Animals, Ramones, Kinks, Monkees, etc. Here's a playlist of songs I've seen in a live performance by the original lead singer, under whatever billing applied at the time. Each designated singer was from a different performance--for example, three different Monkees shows, plus a Micky Dolenz & Davy Jones show--so we're covering a lot of virtual ticket stubs here. Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise! The show is about to begin.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl--y'know, the real one--airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, and on the web at http://sparksyracuse.org/ You can read all about this show's long and weird history here: Boppin' The Whole Friggin' Planet (The History Of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO).
