About Me

My photo

I'm the co-host of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO with Dana & Carl (Sunday nights, 9 to Midnight Eastern, www.westcottradio.org).  As a freelance writer, I contributed to Goldmine magazine from 1986-2006, wrote liner notes for Rhino Records' compilation CD Poptopia!  Power Pop Classics Of The '90s, and for releases by The Flashcubes, The Finkers, Screen Test, 1.4.5., and Jack "Penetrator" Lipton.  I contributed to the books Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth, Shake Some Action, Lost In The Grooves, and MusicHound Rock, and to DISCoveries, Amazing Heroes, The Comics Buyer's Guide, Yeah Yeah Yeah, Comics Collector, The Buffalo News, and The Syracuse New Times.  I also wrote the liner notes for the four THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO compilation CDs, because, well, who could stop me?  My standing offer to write liner notes for a Bay City Rollers compilation has remained criminally ignored.  Still intend to write and sell a Batman story someday.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 840: 50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES!

The Monkees TV series debuted on September 12th, 1966; I caught on not long after that, which means I've been a Monkees fan for nearly 50 years myself. This week, we celebrate 50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES with solo tracks, covers of Monkees songs, original versions of songs The Monkees covered, a Monkees tribute track by The Minus 5 (from their album Of Monkees And Men), and maybe a few songs we wish The Monkees woulda covered (like Rosanne Cash's "Pink Bedroom" [written by John Hiatt], The Flashcubes' "Make Something Happen" [written by Gary Frenay], and Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man"[written by...um, Neil Armstrong. Yeah. It gets lonely on the moon]).  But mostly, we celebrate with the music of Micky, Davy, Peter, and Michael. Three hours ain't nearly enough! Ladies and gentlemen, THE MONKEES!!

To read more of what I have to say about The Monkees, check out the speech I would give if I were to induct The Monkees into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame:  http://carlcafarelli.blogspot.com/2016/09/the-monkees-welcome-to-rock-and-roll.html

Westcott Radio and its partner Spark Syracuse WSPJ 93.5 and 103.3 FM are listener-supported, and your tax-deductible donations are all that allow the hits to keep on comin'. Please consider showing your support with MONEY, at http://sparksyracuse.org/support/. Generous patrons who donate $100 or more receive the opportunity to program the music for a future episode of TIRnRR! Details? HERE, in the SHADOWS! http://carlcafarelli.blogspot.com/2016/09/who-needs-dana-carl-official-rules-for.html And this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week, as we exulted in 50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES!

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl streams live every Sunday night from 9 to Midnight Eastern, exclusively at www.westcottradio.org
