About Me

I'm the co-host of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO with Dana & Carl (Sunday nights, 9 to Midnight Eastern, www.westcottradio.org).  As a freelance writer, I contributed to Goldmine magazine from 1986-2006, wrote liner notes for Rhino Records' compilation CD Poptopia!  Power Pop Classics Of The '90s, and for releases by The Flashcubes, The Finkers, Screen Test, 1.4.5., and Jack "Penetrator" Lipton.  I contributed to the books Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth, Shake Some Action, Lost In The Grooves, and MusicHound Rock, and to DISCoveries, Amazing Heroes, The Comics Buyer's Guide, Yeah Yeah Yeah, Comics Collector, The Buffalo News, and The Syracuse New Times.  I also wrote the liner notes for the four THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO compilation CDs, because, well, who could stop me?  My standing offer to write liner notes for a Bay City Rollers compilation has remained criminally ignored.  Still intend to write and sell a Batman story someday.

50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES Download, And An Apology To Monkees Fans

As some of you know, our weekly show This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl celebrated The Monkees' 50th anniversary this week with a special show we cleverly dubbed 50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES! Dana and I are enthusiastic fans of The Monkees, and have been for years. So we put everything we had into this Silver Anniversary Monkees party, and I think we did pretty well.

Still, we want to apologize to you.

Why are we sorry? Because a razzafrazzin' three-hour show ain't long enough to celebrate The Monkees' 50th anniversary! We tried--oh Lord, we tried!--but we didn't have time to play "Love Is Only Sleeping," or "Goin' Down," or "Birth Of An Accidental Hipster," or "Daily Nightly," or "Someday Man," or "Circle Sky," or "Steam Engine," or "Love To Love," or "Nine Times Blue," or "Terrifying," or "Star Collector," or...aw, you get the idea. Man, the only version of "All Of Your Toys" we played was the master backing track, which we used as our closing instrumental. We didn't have time for the 1968 live-in-Japan "D.W. Washburn," either!

However, we're comforted by the knowledge that we did succeed in paying a sincere and engaging tribute to Micky, Davy, Peter, and Michael. We play The Monkees most weeks anyway, so whatever we missed this time will likely be heard in future shows. We're sorry; but we're not ashamed. You can read the playlist here: http://carlcafarelli.blogspot.com/2016/09/this-is-rock-n-roll-radio-840-50-years.html. More importantly, you can download the show and listen to it again 'n' againhttp://westcottradio.org/archive/rock_n_roll_radio_2016-09-11.mp3 50 years of The Monkees? We're just gettin' started.

While you're too busy downloading to put anybody down, we have two friendly reminders for our supporters. First, you still have time to vote for Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) as Best Blog in The Syracuse New TimesBest Of Syracuse '16 Readers Poll. I'm not optimistic about our chances, but ya never know. But I can tell you with certainty this is the only blog in Syracuse covering The Monkees to the extent I do! You can vote once per e-mail address, and I actively grovel on behalf of votes for me 'n' my friends:

Finally, if you enjoy a radio show that goes the extra distance for something like 50 YEARS OF THE MONKEES, please consider a tax-deductible donation to This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio's partners at Spark Syracuse WSPJ 93.5 and 103.3 FM, who are trying to raise sufficient cash to put This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio and many other fine radio programs on the air in Syracuse. If you donate $100 or more, you earn the opportunity to program the music for a future episode of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. That's right--you can correct our mistakes and play the Monkees tracks we missed! Or, y'know, The Kinks. Or The Ramones, Otis ReddingBig Star...frankly, we don't care if you play Regis Philbin, as long as we get your Benjamins. Mercenary? Sure...but also visionary! After the hard sell, a quick thanks: the attention this blog has received has been...well, not quite humbling, exactly--let's not get crazy--but certainly gratifying. It's fun, it's fulfilling, and it's not stopping any time soon (I hope): As I say, there's a post each day--that's the Boppin' way.
