This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1119

On Friday night, March 4th, Dana and I had the honor of presenting the award for Best Rock Album at this year's celebration of The SAMMYS, aka The Syracuse Music Awards. It was a very cool night of music and community, and some of our selections on next week's TIRnRR  playlist will reflect a bit of our heady buzz in The SAMMYS' afterglow.

This week's radio shindig was recorded before the night of The SAMMYs, before we saw newly-anointed SAMMYS Lifetime Achievement Hall of Famer Tom Kenny perform at the awards show with his incredible band Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas and with members of the Flashcubes and the legendary Andy Paley (as the Kenny/'Cubes/Paley workouts of Eddie and the Hot Rods' "Do Anything You Wanna Do" and the Paley Brothers/Ramones' version of Ritchie Valens' "Come On Let's Go" had me shouting my voice raw mere minutes before I had to get up on stage and speak), and obviously before the next night's epic club performance by Kenny and his Hi-Seas, my first club show in over two years. Still, this week's TIRnRR has its own innate buzz, born of the same Syracuse noise. I love Syracuse. I love Syracuse music.

Music honors no borders. I wrote this elsewhere, in a piece about the Flashcubes:

"All politics is local. The same could be said of musical combos, the local rock group down the street that's trying hard to learn their song. In the garages, in the clubs, in practice spaces, school dances, rec hall hops, coffeehouses, open fields, and cellars full of noise, plugged in or unplugged, sparks ignite when someone says Let's put on a show! Aping Chuck Berry or Chuck DJoan Jett or Joni Mitchell, the Rolling Stones or the Banana Splits, mighty things can happen when a musician near you starts to play.

"In Zion, Illinois. In Minneapolis. Fort Worth. Nashville. Arlington. Bethesda, Maryland. Springfield, Missouri. Toronto. Liverpool. Osaka. Don't forget the Motor City. The beat goes on, and renews itself everywhere. Sweat and adrenaline, soft drinks or beer, virtue and vice, the love of a sound, an urge to participate. Band, meet audience. Audience, meet the band."

And Friday night, in presenting the SAMMYS award for Best Rock Album to Not Robots!, I said, "Syracuse is special. Syracuse music is special. [Renowned CNY DJ] Dave Frisina tells us every week that some of the best rock around can be found right in your own back yard. This is evidence all around you."

There's evidence all around you, too. Wherever you are. Music has no boundaries, and nor does it have a rigid tether to its big-market hotspots. Music is everywhere. Great music is everywhere. There is so much to celebrate, yesterday and today, here, there, and everywhere. Always.

But Dana and Carl report to you from the 315. Wherever you are, we welcome you as one of us. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
