This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1185

This week, I had planned to use this space to talk about the late songwriter Cynthia Weil, to reminisce about how I first became aware of the incredible music she created with her husband and writing partner Barry Mann, to pause just to marvel and appreciate the wonderful body of work that is the Mann-Weil songbook.

On Friday, we heard of the passing of Justine Covault. And I don't have the will to write about much of anything. We never met Justine, and while our sense of loss can't compare to what her family and closest friends are experiencing now, we're still just...gutted.

This week's show was recorded when Justine was still a part of this mortal world. It opens with the title track from her most recent work, the newly-released Justine and the Unclean album The Signal Light. We're leaving the show as-is, to reflect how jazzed we were with Justine's new record, how thrilled we were to play it when we had no reason to believe she wouldn't be around to know we'd played it, knowing she would respond with the enthusiasm she always expressed for whatever the hell it is we do here.

We didn't really know her. But we miss her terribly.

Next week's TIRnRR will offer a proper tribute to Justine. This one hurts. I guess they all hurt. Once again: hug the people you love. Records are short. They're over before we know it.

This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a sad Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This show is available as a podcast.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, and via the TuneIn Radio and Radio Garden apps as Westcott Radio.

IN-PERSON EVENT! On June 29, I will be making an in-store appearance at GENERATION RECORDS, 210 Thompson Street in NYC on behalf of my  new book GABBA GABBA HEY! A CONVERSATION WITH THE RAMONES. The book contains my 1994 interviews with Joey, Johnny, Marky, and C.J., which were cited by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as essential reading. I'll be at Generation to chat with fellow Ramones fans, talk about the book, the interviews, and how the music of the Ramones impacted my life. If you are in the New York area on June 29th, I would love to see you at Generation Records. Hey-ho, let's GO!

REMINDER! You can help our friend (and Radio Deer Camp host) Rich Firestone, and we hope you will: Support Rich's Transition To Disabled Living. And we thanks ya!
