POP-A-LOOZA: Fake THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Playlist--Songs The Flashcubes Like

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is a fake This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio playlist collecting songs that have been covered by my favorite power pop group the Flashcubes.

The Flashcubes have been releasing a series of Big Stir digital singles covering power pop classics. Some of these new versions have been collaborations with the song's original artist (ShoesMimi Betinis of Pezband, and their imminent team-up with the Spongetones). I'm a Flashcubes fan more because of their original songs, but the boys have always had great taste in covers. Their live cover of the Yardbirds' "Heart Full Of Soul" was the tipping point for the start of my Cubic fandom at my first Flashcubes show in 1978. I've written elsewhere about the 'Cubes unexpected live cover of "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" by Herman's Hermits, and I compiled a list of covers I've witnessed the Flashcubes perform live. The recent archival release Flashcubes On Fire preserves an ace 1979 live show, mixing their great originals with covers of the Who, the Kinks, Big Star, Arthur Alexander (via the Beatles), the Raspberries, Eddie Cochran, Larry Williams (also by Fab Four proxy), and Link Wray. You can order Flashcubes On Fire here, and you can read my Flashcubes On Fire liner notes here.

The Flashcubes are way, way more than a mere cover band. But today is about the Flashcubes celebrating the work of other artists. Songs the Flashcubes like form a radio playlist in the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
