Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is a Greatest Record Ever Made! celebration of "September Gurls" by Big Star.
This will, of course, be a chapter in my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). The piece was written before I had a firm notion of developing my GREM! concept--an infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns--into book form. But even before that, "September Gurls" was the song I routinely referred to as The Greatest Record Ever Made. It's not necessarily my all-time # 1 favorite song; that's usually "Baby Blue" by Badfinger (which was the subject of the first GREM! piece I ever got around to actually writing), occasionally "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks, and often something else entirely. "The Tears Of A Clown." "I Only Want To Be With You." "Rain." "Porpoise Song (Theme From Head)." "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker." And sometimes it's "September Gurls." One of an infinite number.
Nonetheless: some song had to be the first one that prompted me to proclaim, THIS! This is THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! That pioneering designation fell to a little record by a little band called Big Star. "September Gurls," my first Greatest Record Ever Made!, shines in the spotlight of the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
