One of the many taglines attached to my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) claims, "Our favorite records don't live in isolation. Each one has a story to tell."
In a similar vein, the song choices on each weekly TIRnRR playlist don't spring from a void. We always get a lot of new stuff to consider, of course, and Dana and I make an effort to include as many of those fresh spins as seem reasonable. But the bulk of each show is claimed by tracks of varying vintage, including classics, outta-left-field obscurities, and recent faves that tickle our innards.
Those choices can be influenced by a number of factors. This week, tracks by Dentist and Hayley Mary were suggested by listeners (Laura Sessions Tinnel and Dave Murray respectively). We know listener Bill Hughes digs Warren Zevon, and that resulted in a spin of Hindu Love Gods. We played Van Halen for Elma "Sparky" Tiran, and Los Lobos for Joel Tinnel, just 'cuz. I heard Circe Link's magnificent "Yellow Dress" while I was working on something else, and I realized it had been way, waaaay too long since its last appearance on TIRnRR. On recent commutes, my iPod told me we oughtta play a great, forgotten 1969 soul single by Glass Houses, as well as the Flashcubes' cover of the Paul Collins' Beat gem "All Over The World." My iPod also requested "You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)" by the Go-Go's, but I amended that to "Can't Stop The World" instead. See, you can't just let your iPod push you around, man.
Dana and I do this show because we're fans, big fans, of rockin' pop music. We don't plan much (if anything) out before assembling the playlist. But we're always listening, always remembering songs that click in a specific way I can't define. Memory and inspiration combine each week to create The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin' Planet.
Our favorite records don't live in isolation. Each one has a story to tell. And it's time for this week's story. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, on the web at http://sparksyracuse.org/, and via the TuneIn Radio and Radio Garden apps as Westcott Radio.
