I didn't know Bobby Sutliff. We were friends on Facebook, but I don't remember whether or not we ever had any substantive contact via the great and powerful interwebs.Nonetheless, I know for damned sure that our indie pop world has suffered a loss with Bobby's passing last week. His body of work, both as a solo artist and with the great rockin' pop combo the Windbreakers (fronted by Bobby and his fellow popsmith Tim Lee), is rightly revered among true rockin' pop believers, and the work will live on. We mourn the loss of the man who created that work.
Bobby's illness brought on a stack of medical debt. At the Windbreakers' Bandcamp page, you can purchase a pair of digital albums--the Windbreakers' Live In Philly 1989 and the various-artists Bobby Sutliff tribute album SKRANG: Sounds Like Bobby Sutliff--with proceeds benefiting Bobby's family. TIRnRR asks you to consider adding these to your collection.
We played a track from Live In Philly 1989 on this week's show. We also played my favorite Bobby Sutliff solo track "Griffin Bay," and we included the Windbreakers' classic "The Girl From Washington" at show's end. We didn't know Bobby. We still mourn as if we did.
It's a long way as the crow flies to your house on Griffin Bay. I don't need a crystal ball to know I won't be back your way. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, on the web at http://sparksyracuse.org/, and via the TuneIn Radio and Radio Garden apps as Westcott Radio.
