As I write this on Saturday afternoon, I'm abuzz in the afterglow of my Friday night in-store appearance at Parthenon Books in Syracuse (on behalf of my book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) and the giddy promise of Saturday night's Grip Weeds show at The Lost Horizon. And then, Sunday will bring a day of warring sensations, of love and family mixed with the regret and sting of time passing. Nothing bad, mind you, or at least I hope nothing bad. But...emotions. I tell ya, yin and yang really need to learn to start playing nice, man.
But Sunday evening will conclude its conflicted self with This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. The show will open with three songs for Brenda, offered on the 40th anniversary of vows declared and foundations built. It will include music from the Rubinoos, as well as some additional tracks featuring Rubinoos guitarist Tommy Dunbar, playing with the Half Cubes, Duncan Faure, Vox Pop, Ken Sharp, Marty Rudnick, Scott McCarl, Kyle Vincent, and Suzy and Los Quattro (plus Spitballs if Tommy happened to play on their version of "Let Her Dance"). That's all in anticipation of the Rubinoos' show at Abilene in Rochester on Friday, July 26th. I've been a Rubinoos fan since I was 17 years old, and I've never seen them in person. I hope circumstances will allow me to remedy that situation on Friday.
Meanwhile, I stand here on Saturday, typing away while wondering what the next day will bring. Yin? Yang? We are destined for both, each and every one of us. We hope to embrace the good, pray we can survive the bad, and muddle ahead with whatever we have.
The music moves with us. Always has, always will, for as long as there's moving left to do. For all of you moving right now in what seems to me the far-future world of Monday: This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
Happy Anniversary, Brenda. I'm up for forty more years if you are. The yin and yang can find their own soundtrack.
