100-Page FAKES! presents: DETECTIVE COMICS # 457

100-Page FAKES! imagines mid-1970s DC 100-Page Super Spectaculars that never were...but should have been!

Denny O'Neil's "There Is No Hope In Crime Alley!" is one of the all-time greatest single-issue Batman stories. This issue introduced the character of Leslie Thompkins, and for me, it's the only Leslie Thompkins appearance that matters. All those subsequent appearances, including use of the character (as played by actress Morena Baccarin) on the TV series Gotham? Sorry. Those are not Leslie Thompkins, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Not Leslie Thompkins

NOT Leslie Thompkins, ferchrissakes...!
Your mileage may vary. I'll stick with the original.

To expand this into phony 100-page status, we take "There Is No Hope In Crime Alley!" and its Elongated Man backup, add a 1970 Batgirl two-parter, some Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Plastic Man, and Batman & Robin, and top it off with a Batman-Metamorpho team-up from 1972.

The Batman in "There Is No Hope In Crime Alley!," Detective Comics # 457 (March 1976)
Batgirl in "Midnight Doom-Boy," Detective Comics # 404 (October 1970)
Batgirl in "The Living Statue!," Detective Comics # 405 (November 1970)
The Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl (untitled), Flash Comics # 37 (January 1943)
The Batman and Robin in "Three's A Crime!," Detective Comics # 146 (April 1949)
Plastic Man (untitled), Police Comics # 5 (December 1941)
The Batman and Metamorpho in "Hot Blood, Cold Gun!," The Brave And The Bold # 101 (April-May 1972) The Elongated Man in "Make Way For The Elongated Woman!," Detective Comics # 457 (March 1976)

All characters copyright DC Comics Inc. The Plastic Man story is public domain, the rest is  depicted here solely in representative pages. I share the whole book with my subscribers. 100-Page FAKES! will return! Meanwhile: Leslie Thompkins' only appearance. That's my story, and I'm stickin' with it.
