Indexing THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE

If my work-in-progress book The Greatest Record Ever Made actually makes it into print, I hope that it will include an index. There's something about an index that lends some indefinable air of authenticity to a nonfiction work. I know an index would present its own set of logistical and budgeting concerns to address, but since the book itself is still in the wouldn't-it-be-cool? stage, I figure I'm free to retain my dream of including an index, at least for the time being.

This is not that index. But it is a partial list of some of the names and entities that could be included in such an index. This list excludes performers given individual coverage as stars of one of the book's 100+ GREM essays, and it does not include any song or album titles. Each of these names comes up at least once in the text of The Greatest Record Ever Made. For kicks, here's a peak:

Some of the references are complimentary, some a bit less so. Many of these are but passing mentions, and some are used as specific historical or contextual points of interest or comparison. Some may not even make this theoretical index, while many more could be added to the index...if there is an index.

Time will tell. More than 81,000 words written, only 23 chapters left to write. Stay tuned.
