Tomorrow is May 4th, and the Star Wars reference is cool, sure. But more to the point: IT'S FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Participating comic book retailers across this great country will have stacks of free comic books available, produced by publishers for the specific purpose of giving 'em all away on Saturday. Many stores will also have overstock back issues to give away, and most will be offering discounts on in-stock items, too. Stores will set individual limits on the number of free books each customer can snag, so check with your local comics emporium for its Free Comic Book Day guidelines.
Free Comic Book Day was invented by Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California. The first FCBD was in 2002, and it's been an annual celebration ever since. I've corresponded a tiny bit with Joe (who is also a pop music fan), and he's one of the good guys. He even sponsored a special Free Comic Book Day edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio a few years back, and I'm going to dig out that playlist to share here tomorrow.
For FCBD 2019, my local shop Comix Zone in North Syracuse is bringing in writer Tom Peyer to sign copies of his work (including the Free Comic Book Day edition of Dragonfly And Dragonflyman # 1). Your local shop may have sumpin special planned, but either way: FREE COMIC BOOKS! And a chance to buy lotsa great stuff as well. You can locate the retailer nearest you via the FCBD Store Locator.
Wanna know more? Of course you do! Visit the Free Comic Book Day website, check out the slate of 2019's free comic book titles, and plan to visit some comics shops on Free Comic Book Day. Free comic books! FREE COMIC BOOKS!
And if you get hungry while stockin' up on comic books, stop in a sandwich shop. Order a hero. Up, up, and AWAY...!
