POP-A-LOOZA: The Kinks, "You Really Got Me"

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares a post from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. This week's shared post is my Greatest Record Ever Made! piece celebrating "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks.

An infinite number of songs can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns. That's the central conceit of my proposed book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1), and the above-linked Kinks piece is (along with "Waterloo Sunset") one of two Kinks chapters in that book. While most of the book remains under wraps in the hope that someone might buy the damned thing if it ever becomes an actual damned thing, I have shared several of its chapters on this blog. Here are links to a few of those chapters:

BADFINGER: Baby Blue
CHUCK BERRY: Promised Land
PATTI SMITH: Gloria
LITTLE RICHARD: The Girl Can't Help It
THE MONKEES: Porpoise Song (Theme From Head)
THE FLASHCUBES: No Promise
THE WONDERS: That Thing You Do!
DAVID BOWIE: Life On Mars?
THE RAMONES: Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
THE SMITHEREENS: Behind The Wall Of Sleep
SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES: The Tears Of A Clown
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Girls In Their Summer Clothes
KISS: Shout It Out Loud
THE DAVE CLARK FIVE: Any Way You Want It
MATERIAL ISSUE: Kim The Waitress
THE GRATEFUL DEAD: Uncle John's Band
BIG STAR: September Gurls
EYTAN MIRSKY: This Year's Gonna Be Our Year
WILSON PICKETT: In The Midnight Hour
THE BAY CITY ROLLERS: Rock And Roll Love Letter
THE DRIFTERS: On Broadway
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: I Only Want To Be With You
GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS: Midnight Train To Georgia
FREDDIE & THE DREAMERS: Do The Freddie
THE BEATLES: Rain

That's just a sample of the 155 song entries currently planned to be included in the book. As a bonus, here are some completed chapters not intended for the book as of now:

THE BEATLES: Hey Jude
THE BUZZCOCKS: Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)
THE RASPBERRIES: I Wanna Be With You
THE CASTAWAYS: Liar, Liar
AL HIRT: The Green Hornet Theme
THE RAMONES: I Don't Want To Grow Up
THE VENTURES: Walk--Don't Run
THE MONKEES: The Girl I Knew Somewhere

Writing a book is a lot of work. But it's work that I enjoy, so it's also a lot of fun. I hope the work pays off and that someday you'll be able to read this book I've been putting together. In the mean time, I offer these tastes of what I have in mind for The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). And that tasting starts with "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks, this week's Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
