"Waterloo Sunset:" is one of two Kinks songs given its infinite turn in my book-in-progress The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1), providing a 1-2 Muswell Hill punch of "Waterloo Sunset" and "You Really Got Me." The Kinks also have a presence in two other chapters in the book, discussing Holly Golightly's cover of "Time Will Tell" and The Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)," though the latter is less Kinks-specific. (The Buzzcocks chapter is also on my list of entries likely to be dropped from the book as I try to move forward, though that decision has not yet been made.)
The Kinks have certainly established a bootprint on this blog. One of my earliest blog pieces was a reprise of an earlier essay about why I love The Kinks. That, in turn, was expanded into an Everlasting First piece about how I became a Kinks fan, one of this blog's all-time most-read posts. I've also written about my vicarious introductions to some Kinks songs, and my five favorite 1970s Kinks songs. The Kinks were at the heart of "A Girl And A Boy: The Story So Far," a 2014 TIRnRR playlist wherein I attempted to tell the story of a relationship, the individual songs arranged as a conversation between the girl and the boy. I look back on that one with the willful sin of pride.
But today, we gaze at the sun setting over the Waterloo underground. A Greatest Record Ever Made! celebration of The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" is the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
