This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1254

To a large degree, our musical tastes (or at least their rough parameters) are defined in youth. That's not an iron-clad rule, and our chosen boundaries are subject to change over time. But passion first emerges when we are young. And there's nothing wrong with keeping that passion, expanding upon it if we can (and want to), but retaining our delighted fascination with the sounds that move us. I've been a Beatles fan since I was four years old. They've never been the only great band. But there's never been a time since 1964 when the Beatles didn't loom large in my legend.

From the Beatles, I went back in time for performers that influenced the Beatles. I went forward through performers influenced by the Beatles, and performers influenced by performers influenced by the Beatles. Six decades after seeing A Hard Day's Night at the drive-in, my ongoing left turn at Greenland continues to lead me to discover great sounds, old and new alike. Any record you ain't heard is a new record. Won't know if you like it until you've listened to it.

The spark of new never grows old. And the warmth of what we already love? Well, that doesn't need to fade away at all, does it?

We won't like everything. I have little interest in hip hop or modern country, a jam band is unlikely to grab me, and I'm not a jazz guy. I still try to keep my ears open, just in case. Could something unfamiliar find purchase in the sovereign land of my music?

One never know, do one?

We dig the old. We dig the new. We try to play both, and we try to keep learning, expanding, and digging for whatever digging time remains. There is so much out there.

And it's worth the dig.
