This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1256

Almost twenty-six years into whatever This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio is supposed to be, I continue to be fascinated by the playlists that result from our collaborative programming. I play a record, then Dana plays a record. That was our approach when we began TIRnRR at the end of 1998, remained our method throughout our years of live-in-the-studio broadcasts, and it's carried through into our post-pandemic remote programming. I play a record. Dana plays a record. There have been occasional theme shows programmed solely by either Dana or me, there have been guest programmers, and there are often moments when one or the other of us wants to program a two-in-a-row or three-in-a-row track sequence. Otherwise, the programming plan we started in '98 is still the programming plan in place today.

Granted, "plan" isn't a word usually associated with TIRnRR programming. But I approach each weekly playlist-building session armed with a bunch of potential song choices, and I believe Dana does the same. The rock 'n' roll radio alchemy ensues as individual selections are weighed, evaluated, combined with others, or deferred to some other week.

We can't predict what the end product will be. I tell ya, even with the selections made and sequenced, I often still can't tell how it's all going to flow, how it's all going to work.

But, invariably, it does flow, and it does work. Like clockwork. Like precision improv, which seems an oxymoron but isn't. It's rock 'n' roll radio. And it's a magic, magic science in action. Fascinating. And fun! This is what the magic science of rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl airs Sunday nights from 9 to Midnight Eastern, on the air in Syracuse at SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, streaming at SPARK stream, and on the Radio Garden app as WESTCOTT RADIO. Recent shows are archived at Westcott Radio
