Here's a make-believe follow-up to this week's real-word Cubic Roots edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. The actual show gathered the original versions of songs that the Flashcubes or the Half/Cubes covered on officially-released albums; today's addendum presents a playlist of originals that I saw the Flashcubes cover live, but in each case a song that never appeared on any legit 'Cubes release.
My memory stopped short of providing enough songs to fill a three-hour radio show, so we have two supplemental sets to muscle things up. The Not Really Covers set is six original songs that individual members of the 'Cubes released outside of the group's aegis, but which subsequently appeared in a Flashcubes live performance. I'm not 100% sure that Arty Lenin wrote or cowrote Steve Carr's "I Want To Touch You In The Dark," but he plays and sings lead, and it's close enough for our purposes. The Second-Hand News set collects a few songs the Flashcubes covered in live shows, but which I never had the good fortune of witnessing first-hand.
And the show begins with the very first song the Flashcubes played at their very first show, September 1st 1977 at The Brookside. Another Fab Four. John, Paul, George, and Ringo? Meet Gary, Paul, Arty, and Tommy. Hold tight! It's more of the roots of the Flashcubes.
