POP-A-LOOZA: COME ON LET'S GO! (A real power pop compilation inspires a series of four imaginary power pop compilations)

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post collects tracks from one real-life power pop compilation CD and four imaginary sequels, boppin' under the title COME ON LET'S GO!

The original inspiration for these flights of fancy was the fab British label Big Beat's 2019 collection Come On Let's Go! Come On Let's Go! eventually led to a pair of actual sequels,  Girls Go Power Pop! and Rockets Of Love!. But I couldn't wait for the real world to catch up, so I fabricated a quartet of follow-ups, It's Cold Outside!, Kids Just Wanna Dance!, Gotta Have Pop!, and Do Anything You Wanna Do! And I would buy each and every of these if they existed. Come on, Big Beat--let's GO!

More immediately, collecting the original individual blog posts from 2019 dovetailed into a notion to make the upcoming July 3rd edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio a spotlight on classic power pop. Some have suggested that "a spotlight on classic power pop" could otherwise be called "Sunday night" in the TIRnRRverse, but I don't think that's so. While "power pop" is the stated format for whatever the hell it is we do on the radio each week, it's just a convenient label, not a strict format. I don't think we could execute a true power pop format. And, as much as I adore power pop, I wouldn't want this weekly shindig to be all power pop all the time.

TIRnRR has never really been a power pop show. We do have a power pop attitude with a wider focus, which includes artists from Little Richard to the Sex Pistols, Wanda Jackson to Joan Armatrading, alongside your power pop prerequisites like Shoes and the Romantics. Over the course of more than 1100 shows, I don't think we've ever done a specific power pop show.

So we're finally doing one this Sunday. On July 3rd, TIRnRR presents COME ON LET'S GO! A Celebration Of Classic Power Pop, Pure Pop, And The Power Pop Periphery. We've assembled a fantastic array of power pop and related tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, and bridged the time from yesterday to today with all of the Flashcubes' singles, then and now. It's pop with power, and it makes for one hell of a great radio show.

We hope you'll join us. Meanwhile, get set by immersing yourself in some power pop, pure pop, and the power pop periphery, all listed in the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
