POP-A-LOOZA: THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! Eddie Cochran, "Somethin' Else"

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is another entry from the collected works of The Greatest Record Ever Made!, spotlighting "Somethin' Else" by Eddie Cochran.

Recognizing--as always!--that an infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record ever made as long as they take turns, the Eddie Cochran piece is intended for my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). It's included in this version of the book's blueprint, but not in this one nor any of the other smaller variations I've drawn up. The former (longer) edit is the one a prospective publisher is considering. But I'm mindful of the fact that, even if the book goes forward, some changes may be necessary.

As the piece itself notes, I've tagged "Please Please Me" by the Beatles as power pop's point of origin. But some of Eddie Cochran's stuff should be a part of the discussion, too. You can read more of my thoughts about the parameters of power pop in previous posts about "Pop With POWER!," the Creation, my Top Ten power pop acts, the Flashcubes, the history of power pop, and, oh, about a gazillion other pieces littered throughout this blog. And, whatever form the GREM! book eventually takes (if it takes form at all), there will be a significant power pop presence contained therein.

For now, let's look back on a power pop record that predates when I say power pop started. I am large. I contain multitudes. And a Greatest Record Ever Made! celebration of a fantastic Eddie Cochran single provides our subject for the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
