This week's radio shindig finds us dipping into a few forthcoming various-artists compilation albums, plus another compilation that came out a little while ago but we hadn't gotten around to spinning before. We're slackers, but we're intrepid slackers.
The headline item is Pop Aid, a three-disc set from Kool Kat Musik, which serves up worthy pop music for the right worthy cause of humanitarian aid (via World Central Kitchen) for the people of Ukraine. Pop Aid delivers 63 tracks from an all-star assortment of essential rockin' pop performers, and I think all of the tracks make their CD debuts on this collection. We opened the show with a Pop Aid track by the Overtures, and circled back to add selections by the Flashcubes and Mike Browning. More Pop Aid in the weeks to come, but don't wait for us. BUY IT!!
We also debuted the first teaser single from Jem Records Celebrates Pete Townshend, delivered in the form of our pals Lisa Mychols and Super 8 transforming the Who's "I Can't Explain" into a slow-burnin' Peggy Lee-style scorcher. Fever. I can't explain, but it's fever. Keep your eyes and ears on Jem Records for further word on Jem Records Celebrates Pete Townshend.
I bet a bunch of you are familiar with Adam Waltemire, host of Pop Garden Radio. Yep, even DJs as humility-challenged as Dana & Carl recognize there are a lot of great radio shows out there beyond our familiar TIRnRR, and we encourage you to listen to a big ol' bunch of 'em, including Pop Garden Radio. A little while back, Adam decided to weaponize his own 50th birthday by giving all of us a great big present: a whompin', stompin' 74-track digital compilation called Sing Me A Song--A 50th Birthday Celebration. HuzZAH! From Sing Me A Song, we cherry-picked Barry Holdship's amazing cover of Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe." You can bet on continued Sing Me A Song spins right here in the very near future.
Finally, there is our own imminent compilation CD This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 5. We've just settled on the track listing, and we're hoping to get it mastered and prettified in time for a September release by the above-acclaimed Kool Kat Musik label. We are SO damned proud of ourselves, and we reveled in our giddy splendor with plays of TIRnRR Volume 5 tracks from Chris von Sneidern and Amy Rigby. We have heard a rough mix of the entire compilation, in sequence, and we can fully proclaim our delight in the result.
That wasn't all we did this week, of course. We also mixed in new music from Old Town Crier, the Amplifier Heads, the Walker Brigade, and Laurie Biagini, and we played a lot of other fave raves, both recent and classic. Scan the playlist, and listen when you can. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
