I love Lay's Potato Chips. I generally favor the original recipe, but I try other flavors every now and again. Frito-Lay occasionally runs contests to come up with new Lay's chip flavors, and I figured I'd try one of my own. Inspired by both Central New York's passion for salt potatoes (salty little whole, skin-on potatoes, dripping with butter) and by The Tearjerkers's classic local single "Syracuse Summer" (written by Gary Frenay of The Flashcubes), I submitted my idea for Lay's Syracuse Summer Salt Potato Chips:
Syracuse winters gets all the attention. Snow? Sure, we get snow. But those long, cold months of icy roads and blizzard conditions only make us appreciate the short sunny season even more. You can't have a picnic, barbecue, or beach party around here without the salty, buttery taste of Syracuse Salt Potatoes. Add some crunch, and you've got a sweet 'n' savory snack like no other. So grab a bunch, get some friends, turn up the music, and soak up the sun. We'll need the snow shovels again before too long.
And it was for damned sure that I wanted my Syracuse Summer Salt Potato Chips to come in an orange bag. Go Orange!
And yeah, I know this is likely as close as we'll get to seeing my orange-clad Syracuse Summer Salt Potato Chips on the shelves at Wegmans (or Food Lion, or Winn-Dixie, or Piggly Wiggly). But we'll (Syracuse) crunch to our heart's content for now. You can visit my page at Lay's "Do Us A Flavor" to indicate your willingness and eagerness to buy a bag of these imaginary taste treats. I'll let you know if it ever moves beyond that. It would be cool to hand out bags of Syracuse Summer Salt Potato Chips at The Flashcubes' 40th Anniversary show on September 1st...!
