TONIGHT: THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1) at PARTHENON BOOKS in Syracuse

FRIDAY JULY 19th

At 6:00 this evening I will be making an in-store appearance at PARTHENON BOOKS, 333 South Salina Street in Syracuse, speaking on behalf of my new book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). I'll read a chapter or two from the book, chat with interested parties, sign autographs for those so inclined, and probably break out my Baron Daemon impression.

But don't let THAT scare you away. Come on down to Parthenon! Hope to see you there.

If you like what you see here on Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do), please consider a visit to CC's Tip Jar

My new book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) is now available for order; you can see details here. My 2023 book Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation With The Ramones is also still available, courtesy of the good folks at Rare Bird Books

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1): Link to my TV appearance, plus updates on other related stuff

I had an absolute blast yesterday with my Bridge Street appearance on Syracuse's NewsChannel 9. Bridge Street hosts Steve Infanti and Iris St. Meran made me feel welcome as we discussed my new book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). Producer Erik Columbia complimented me for making the hosts laugh, and a splendid time was bludgeoned into the craniums of all. Many, many thanks to Erik, Steve, Iris, Kate Thornton, Tim Fox and everyone else at Bridge Street for all of the everything they did. If you missed it, you can see my Bridge Street segment here.

Next up, of course, is my in-store this Friday evening, July 19th, at Parthenon Books, 333 South Salina Street in Syracuse. Parthenon is across the street from The Landmark Theatre, a venue immortalized in my book's chapter about the Kinks. I'll be at Parthenon from 6 to 7 pm, chatting about all things GREM!, and probably reading a chapter or two from the book. Parthenon has GREM! in stock, so here's your chance to snag a copy for your own bad self.

Previously on The Adventures Of GREM!, we've seen recommendations of the book courtesy of The Ego Has Landed and Remember The Lightning, and thrilled to WDHA-FM The Rock Of New Jersey DJ Jim Monaghan's chat with me on his show All Mixed Up. Looking ahead, there will be a review of the book in the next issue of Shindig! magazine (# 154, on sale in August), and I'll be hypin' and hawkin' the book with David Bash and Mark Hershberger in mid-August on their essential weekly show Material Issues. In between your Shindig! and your Material Issues, my This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio co-host Dana Bonn and I will be guests on another of my favorite weekly podcasts; the specifics of that announcement will follow in due time. I'll also be doing a text Q & A with one of my favorite music journalists some time in the near future. Stay tuned!

And that's all that's set at the moment. If you have a forum, I'm open to to it. But first, let's see what we can do at Parthenon this Friday.

TODAY ON SYRACUSE TELEVISION: My new book THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1)

WEDNESDAY JULY 17, 2024

Today, I will be appearing on the popular local morning TV talk show Bridge Street to discuss my new book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). I will be an in-studio guest, and I hope my friends in the 315 can tune in to see me chatting with the Bridge Street hosts about all things GREM! Bridge Street airs from 10 to 11 am on Syracuse's NewsChannel 9.

This will be my third appearance on Bridge Street. Coincidentally, today's appearance comes precisely ten years after my Bridge Street debut, July 17, 2014, when I joined Flashcubes bassist Gary Frenay and my This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio co-host Dana Bonn to hype on behalf of Bright Lights!, the live Syracuse Punk And New Wave Reunion show that was happening that week in '14. And of course I was on Bridge Street last year promoting my then-new book Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation With The Ramones. You can still see my 2023 Bridge Street Ramones appearance here; alas, the Bright Lights! spot has withdrawn its shy self from the interwebs. Time waits for no one!

It's always a pleasure to be on Bridge Street, and I'm very much looking forward to this opportunity to spread the GREM! Gospel. Bridge Street does not stream live, but today's individual show segments should be posted to Channel 9's website some time this afternoon.

But if you're in Syracuse and its surrounding areas, you can tune in LIVE on colorful Channel 9 from 10 to 11 am. Channel 9? Hey! That was the home of Baron Daemon, whose single "The Transylvania Twist" earns a chapter in The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1).

Well then! I'm bringing my Baron Daemon 45 with me for good luck. Grab a hold of your baby and hold her tight....

Published Today: THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1)

July 10th, 2024: Showtime.

My long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) is published today as a paperback and an ebook. The paperback is distributed through Ingram, so your favorite local indie bookseller should be able to order one for you with dizzying efficiency. You know the drill: KEEP BOOKSTORES ALIVE! The physical release is ISBN-13: 9798227451941.

Autographed copies are currently in stock and available immediately from my friends at Kool Kat Musik. You can also order personalized autographed copies from me ($34 including shipping within the continental US, PayPal to ccdatsme@aol.com), but be aware that there may be a slight delay in shipping from my supply. For those still interested in picking up a copy of my first book, I have a very limited number of copies of Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation With The Ramones, $25 autographed from me via PayPal, same terms as above. The Ramones book remains available from the publisher Rare Bird Books, and the mighty Rare Bird's supply is deeper than mine. Your local indie bookstore can order that one, too!

Otherwise? The GREM! paperback and/or ebook are available from all of your usual big resources, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple (Apple has ebook only). Like Chickenman, I'm everywhere.

(Well...maybe not quite everywhere. As an independent publication, The Greatest Record Ever Made! [Volume 1] isn't likely to appear on the shelves at most bookstores. But they CAN order it for you. And please let me know if you ever spot a copy of GREM! in the wild. That would be cool!)

Today, I'll be chatting about the book with Jim Monaghan, host of WDHA Morning Jolt and the weekly All Mixed Up on WDHA The Rock Of New Jersey. Jim's interview with me will air on the Sunday 7/14 edition of All Mixed Up, which beams its waves across the land from 7 to 10 am Eastern. Next Wednesday, July 17, I'll be an in-studio guest on the fab morning TV talk show Bridge Street on Syracuse's NewsChannel 9. And at 6:00 on Friday, July 19th, I'll be appearing in-person at Parthenon Books, 333 South Salina Street in Syracuse. Come on DOWN!

I have a couple of podcast appearances scheduled for August--details to follow--and I'll do more of 'em with anyone who offers me a platform for pontificatin'. Just show me to the podium, man.

The book's first review appeared Monday, courtesy of my friend Dave Murray, followed on Tuesday by a recommendation from S. W. Lauden at Remember The Lightning. Bring 'em on. The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). The long-threatened book is finally here.

This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 1240: THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1): 6/30/2024

My new book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) has been in the works for years. Its roots stretch back even before 2019 (when I first announced my intent to write the book), before 2016 (when I posted my first GREM! essay on my blog), and before 2011 or so, when I repeated a familiar mantra from this radio show, a mantra which eventually evolved into this book's premise:

An infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record ever made, as long as they take turns.

This week's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl celebrates the result of my long-threatened book's long and winding path to publication. The playlist collects a mere 48 of the 145 tracks discussed in my GREM! book, with minimal interruption. The interruptions, in fact, are readings of brief snippets from the book itself. So yeah, this one's all GREM! all the time.

Apologies to Crazy Elephant, Wilson Pickett, the Hollies, Melanie with the Edwin Hawkins Singers, Petula Clark, Arthur Alexander, Translator, Lesley Gore, the Shangri-Las, the Shirelles, Pink Floyd, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Bobby Fuller Four, Merle Haggard, the Temptations, Buddy Holly, Roberta Flack, Johnny Nash, the Rare Breed, the Rolling Stones, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Bob Dylan, the Kingsmen, Baron Daemon and the Vampires, the Marvelettes, the Who, Todd Rundgren, Shoes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Ike and Tina Turner, the Ronettes, the Knickerbockers, the Wonders, the Dave Clark Five, James Brown, Grand Funk, the First Class, the Isley Brothers, Rick James, the Pandoras, Marvin Gaye, Linda Ronstadt, P. P. Arnold, Sammy Ambrose, Big Star, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, the New Pornographers, Yoko Ono, Donna Summer, Rufus, Heart, the Breakaways, the Easybeats, the Byrds, the 5th Dimension, the Jackson Five, Sly and the Family Stone, the BanglesHeadgirl, Millie Small, the Flirtations, the Spinners, the Partridge Family, Suzi Quatro, David Ruffin, Led Zeppelin, Freddie and the Dreamers, the Bandwagon, Don Henley, Ben E. King, Grandmaster and Melle Mel, the Velvet Underground, Del Shannon, the Cocktail Slippers, Sam and Dave, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, the Four Tops, Verdelle Smith, the Bob Seger System, Jive Five, Freda Payne, the Contours, the Go-Go's, the Supremes, the Beach Boys, Raspberries, the Selecter, Tracey Ullman, the Drifters, the Coasters, Cheap Trick, Tegan and Sara, David Bowiethe O'Jays, and the T-Bones...

...you're ALL in the book, along with two more by the Beatles, and each on equal footing with the artists and tracks we did manage to squeeze into this week's overstuffed playlist, and with an infinite number of other worthy tracks I might get around to discussing if I ever follow through with GREM! Volume 2.

Details on The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) and how to order it can be found here. And in that GREM! vein: This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on another Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

Isn't it the greatest?

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1)

The first physical copies of my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) have arrived. The official street date for both the paperback and ebook is July 10th. If you have an independent bookstore in your area, I encourage you to consider ordering your copy from those nice folks. In Syracuse? HERE! In Buffalo? HERE! In Brockport, NY, where the book's foreword takes place? HERE! Hell, in St. Louis? HERE! The book is available through Ingram, so your favorite indie bookseller should not have any issue in securing you your very own GREM! as a special order. It is also, of course, available from all of the usual suspects, including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I don't knock any of 'em. But I have a special place in my heart for the independent bookstores. KEEP BOOKSTORES ALIVE!

That said, logistics dictate that autographed copies have to come directly from me. I mean, I'll sign anyone's copy in person, but if you do want to order an autographed copy of GREM!, my PayPal stands ready. Autographed copies can be purchased for $34, PayPal only, including shipping to mailing addresses within the continental US. My PayPal address is ccdatsme@aol.com.

And that's our story. This labor of love has been a long, long time in coming, and I remain hopeful that many of you will dig the result. I will be appearing on Syracuse's morning TV talk show Bridge Street on Wednesday, July 17th, and I will have an in-store at Syracuse's Parthenon Books on Friday, July 19th, at 6:00 pm. Hijinks? LET 'em ensue! And I thank you for your interest in The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1).

PREVIOUSLY ON THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1):

Let's hear the hype again!

Our favorite records don’t live in isolation. Each one has a story.

Insisting that an infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record ever made (as long as they take turns), writer and DJ Carl Cafarelli's book THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1) ties together threads connecting classic rock, soul, pop, punk, hip hop, and bubblegum across decades of hits, misses, critics’ darlings, one-hit wonders, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, and complete unknowns. The result reads like an irresistible mix tape in book form, compelling the reader to follow its flow from song to song and chapter to chapter as if it were a novel.

As an experienced pop historian and journalist, Cafarelli knows the importance of recording facts and figures accurately. But passion is of equal importance. We don’t crank the volume for fave rave sounds as academics; we listen as fans, as people living our complicated lives with music as not merely its soundtrack, but as its heartbeat. Records reflect our hopes, our disappointments, our successes, our mourning, our love, our bitterness, our fear, and our will to dance in spite of it all.

Why did the Monkees go from the top of the pops in 1967 to seeming has-been status in 1968? How did James Brown respond to the British Invasion? What minefields of racism, sexism, homophobia, ambition, frustration, depression, or loss were navigated by Little Richard, Dusty Springfield, the Go-Go's, Elvis, Sly and the Family Stone, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, and Material Issue's Jim Ellison? Were the Ramones as much a bubblegum band as they were a punk band? When does a group succeed or fail in its quixotic quest to be the next Beatles?

And why does listening to pop music sometimes make us want to cry?

Carl Cafarelli is the author of the 2023 book Gabba Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation With The Ramones. He has written for Goldmine, DISCoveries, The Syracuse New TimesFeral House, Routledge, Visible Ink Press, AHOY Comics, and Rhino Records. Since 1998, he has been the co-host (with Dana Bonn) of the internationally-renowned weekly broadcast and internet radio show This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl, and he is the author of the daily blog Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do)THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1) mixes history lessons, artist appreciation, and the ways in which the records we love can deeply affect our personal lives.

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1) is unlike any other rock or pop book you’ve ever seen. The infinite awaits. It's our turn now.

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! (VOLUME 1): alternate cover graphics

As I prep for the July 10th publication of my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1), I want to share images of some of the graphics I considered using for the book's cover.

THE GREATEST RECORD                        EVER MADE!                                      (Volume 1)      By Carl Cafarelli
THE GREATEST RECORD                        EVER MADE!                                      (Volume 1)
         By Carl Cafarelli

THE GREATEST RECORD                        EVER MADE!                                       (Volume 1) By Carl Cafarelli

     THE GREATEST RECORD                        EVER MADE!
    (Volume 1) By Carl Cafarelli

All of the above considered as elements creating the final design:

The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) is out July 10th as an ebook and as a physical paperback. ISBN for the physical book is
9798227451941, and I'm told it's available for bookstores to order through Ingram. It's happening. And it's happening now.
